Ḥukm al-Istiḥāḍah
• • Definition: Seeking refuge with Allah before

Types of Istiʿādhah Application
• • Before beginning recitation – said silently in
prayer.
• • Out loud – if reading aloud in a group or

Ḥukm al-Basmala
• • Definition: ‫ِبْس ِم الَّلِه الَّر ْح َٰمِن الَّر ِح يِم‬
• • Ruling: Sunnah before every Surah except
At-Tawbah.
• • Usage:
• - Between two surahs
• - At the start from middle of a surah

Basmala
• 1. Stop at end of first + stop after Basmala +
start next
• 2. Stop at end of first + continue Basmala +
next

Intro to Nūn Sākina & Tanwīn
• • Nūn Sākina: ‫( ْن‬Nūn with sukūn)
• • Tanwīn: ‫( ـًــٍــٌـ‬double short vowels)
• • Rules apply when followed by specific letters
Four Rules of Nūn Sākina & Tanwīn
• 1. Iẓhār – Clear (‫)ء هـ ع ح غ خ‬
• 2. Iqlāb – Change to )‫م (ب‬
• 3. Idghām – Merge (‫)ي ر م ل و ن‬
• 4. Ikhfā’ – Hidden (remaining 15 letters)
Iẓhār – Clear Pronunciation
• • No nasal sound (ghunnah)
• • Letters: ‫ خ‬،‫ غ‬،‫ ح‬،‫ ع‬،‫ هـ‬،‫ء‬
• • Example: ‫ َعِليٌم َح ِكيٌم‬, ‫ِمْنُهْم‬
Iqlāb – Conversion
• • ‫ ن‬or tanwīn becomes ‫ م‬+ nasal sound
(ghunnah)
• • Only letter: ‫ب‬
• • Example: ‫ → ِمن َبْعِد‬mim baʿdi
Idghām – Merging
• • Merge ‫ ن‬or tanwīn with next letter
• • Letters: ‫ ن‬،‫ و‬،‫ ل‬،‫ م‬،‫ ر‬،‫ي‬
• • With ghunnah: ‫ و‬،‫ م‬،‫ ن‬،‫ي‬
• • Without ghunnah: ‫ ل‬،‫ر‬
