Kinematics in
One Dimension
4 Fundamental Kinematic Equation
What is Kinematic Equation?
The kinematic equations are set of four
equations that can be utilized to predict
unknown information about an object's
motion if other information is known.
Note: It is use only if the object traveling at a
constant acceleration.
Assignment
A delivery tricycle starts moving from a warehouse located 10m west of a
grocery store. It travels eastward with an initial velocity of 12m/s and
accelerates constantly at 3m/s2. Let the grocery store be the origin xf=0m.
And the positive direction be eastward.
a. What are the position and velocity of the tricycle of 4s after it starts?
b. How far has it traveled from its starting point after 4s?
c. At what time does the tricycle reach a velocity of 24m/s?
d. Where is the tricycle when its velocity is 24m/s?
e. How long will it take the tricycle to reach the grocery store xf=0m?
• Free Fall is an example of a uniformly
accelerated motion. When an object falls
under the influence of gravity alone then
it is in a state of free fall.
• Near the surface of the earth, the
acceleration due to gravity can be
taken as a constant: g = -9.8 m/s2
(directed downward). At this stage, we
shall also neglect air resistance. Thus, we
can take gravity as the only influence on
an object in “free fall”.
Sample Problems
A student throw a ball vertically upward from the second floor of a “very
with the railing with an upward speed of 15.0 𝑚/s. The ball is then in free
tall” senior high school building. The ball leaves the hand at a point even
(a) the ball’s position and velocity 1.00 𝑠 and 4.00 𝑠 after leaving from the
fall. On its way back down, it just misses the railing. Find:
(b) the ball’s velocity when it is 5.00 𝑚 above the railing;
hand;
(c) the maximum height reached; and
(d) the ball’s acceleration when it is at its maximum height.
