The objective of this course is to introduce the student to switching and transmission as applied within the telecommunications infrastructure. The material to be discussed during this course will include the background and terminology of telecommunications, digital switching, network synchronization, control and management.
STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES
1. Ability to analyze the characteristics of the telephone systems. 2. Ability to make use of the parameters in designing telephone switches. 3. Ability to analyze the performance of a digital telephone switch. 4. Ability to analyze network synchronization and network management.

4. Signaling System
Transmission System
Signals (Information) need to be transported from its source into its destination. Hence, communication links are required. The communication link between two switching sites is called a Trunk. There are different types of communication systems depending on the transmission media:
Guided Ch. Unguided Ch. Microwave
Copper Cables
Optical Fiber
Terrestrial
Satellite
Transmission System (contd)
Switching Systems
The function of a switching system is to receive the messages, calls and control information, and forward it to the required destination. The switching system sets up a communication path between any two communicating points.
In telephone networks the components of the switching system are called the central offices (CO).
In telephone networks the switching method is called Circuit Switching since a real 2 wire electrical circuit is established between the two communicating points.

Signaling System
Basic tasks of a signaling system are :
- Supervisory signals (e.g. call set up and call monitor). - Routing signals ( how to reach the called subscriber). - Management signals (network status , billing, routing plans, traffic overload, priorities and class of service).
Signaling provides an interface between national and international switching systems.
Signaling information may share the communication links with the traffic information (In-band signaling ), or may be assigned separate links (Common Channel Signaling CCS).
