What is Visual Communication


Visual Communication is graphic design Visual Communication combines speech, written language and imagery into messages that are aesthetically pleasing. It connects to audiences on intellectual and emotional level and provide them with relevant information. Visual Communication identifies, informs, instructs, interprets and persuades viewers to do something.

Parts of the Whole

Semiotics: The study of signs and symbols and their impact on communication and language

Signs are 3 types: icons, symbols, indexes

Depth of Meaning: There are 7 layers before an information reaches the viewers
Perception Sensation Emotion Intellect Indentification Reverberation Spirituality

Perceiving Visual Messages (Context)

High Context Societies (Asia, Latin America and eastern Europe): Interprets aesthetic messages that utilizes many layers of depth and meaning. E.g. Story, inside joke, visually complex symbolism. Low Context Societies (North America, Northern Europe): Interpretation of Visual messages in literal. Doesnt like complexities. E.g. Exec Summaries, Bulleted points

Cultural Consideration: Each culture has different visual interpretations. E.g. Swastika Color: Influences psychology and emotion of the views

Typography, Symbols, Illustration, Photography Point, Line, Surface, Volume, Dimension Size, Shape, Color, Tone, Movement, Opacity, Direction

Conveyance, Theme, Audience, Purpose, Clarity. Placement, Balance, Grouping, Consistency, Contrast, Alignment, Flow, Figure and ground, Closure.

Consistency is the Key (Consistency as in composition in VC) Maintain Standards (Consistency as in VC) Explain Rules (Clarity as in VC) Support both Novices and Experts (Audience as in VC) Good Navigation (Placement, Flow and Consistency as in VC) Clearly word messages and labels (Clarity as in VC) Use color appropriately (Color usage as in VC) Follow the contrast rule (Contrast as in VC) Use Fonts Appropriately (Typography as in VC) Align Fields properly (Alignment as in VC) Group things on screen effectively (Grouping as in VC)
