INTELLIGENT ETHERNET SERVICE
                                     DEMARCATION
THE FIBER SERVICE PLATFORM For years, enterprises and carriers alike have wanted to extend Ethernet
to wide area networking since there are many advantages to be gained by

FSP 150 demarcation and extension products. Etherjack® demarcation
comprises two primary components, each located at the customer
premise, which are key to extending Carrier Ethernet services: the
Network Interface Device (NID) and the User Network Interface (UNI).
The Etherjack® NID provides the capability to monitor service availability,
delay, jitter and dropped packets. These four parameters are critical for
verifying SLA conformance for billing purposes and providing advance
indication of performance degradation before a service outage occurs.
Carriers can make this data available to customers through a web portal
to facilitate customer network management, as is often done with Private
                                     Line or Frame Relay services.

Application Note: Intelligent Business Ethernet

  • 1. INTELLIGENT ETHERNET SERVICE DEMARCATION THE FIBER SERVICE PLATFORM For years, enterprises and carriers alike have wanted to extend Ethernet to wide area networking since there are many advantages to be gained by The FSP product family provides comprehensive Optical+Ethernet having LANs and WANs share Ethernet as a single protocol. Since networking solutions for access, Ethernet has been designed for local area networking and didn’t initially metro core and regional networks. offer demarcation points found in traditional data services, the carrier was ADVA Optical Networking is focused on the needs of enterprise left unable to identify where its network ended and the customer’s and service provider customers network began. The resulting lack of defined network boundaries and deploying data, storage, voice and visibility had limited Ethernet services to being best-effort services that video applications. were unsatisfying for both customers and carriers. Despite the weak definition of network boundaries, however, Ethernet RELATED PRESS RELEASES technology emerged quickly as the preferred protocol in the carrier access PhyFlex and ADVA Optical domain. This evolution was mainly driven by carriers assigning a Networking team to extend significantly lower cost per bandwidth to Ethernet compared to legacy Carrier-Ethernet services services rather than the scalability and flexibility inherently offered by the ADVA Optical Networking’s FSP 150 Ethernet protocol. Started to be deployed in the metro and access domain deployed by P&TLuxembourg to offer of carrier networks, Carrier Ethernet as a Layer 2 technology is foreseen intelligent Ethernet services to replace legacy SONET/SDH networks across the entire infrastructure. ALLIANCE PARTNERS Business challenges The ADVA FSP is qualified by the From the carrier’s perspective, a best-effort service is a commodity following partner: offering, unable to support a price tag that justifies broad scale rollout. This situation, however, is remedied with the introduction of new CFM and OAM standards and ADVA Optical Networking’s Etherjack® technology, which provides a precise and highly intelligent Ethernet demarcation point between carrier and customer networks. CERTIFICATIONS Besides the existance of clear demarcation points and the capability to The ADVA FSP is compliant with the monitor and troubleshoot Ethernet services end-to-end, intelligent service following industry standards: definition is a major challenge to service providers today. Initially offering solely bandwidth products, carriers are now required to evolve to more intelligent Ethernet services adopting to the demands created by their customers’ data applications. Integrated delivery of services with differentiated Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and backhauling of multi- service traffic from cell towers in mobile networks are only two examples demonstrating the strong requirement for intelligent service definition. Solution ADVA Optical Networking features Etherjack® technology in each of its FSP 150 demarcation and extension products. Etherjack® demarcation comprises two primary components, each located at the customer premise, which are key to extending Carrier Ethernet services: the Network Interface Device (NID) and the User Network Interface (UNI). The Etherjack® NID provides the capability to monitor service availability, delay, jitter and dropped packets. These four parameters are critical for verifying SLA conformance for billing purposes and providing advance indication of performance degradation before a service outage occurs. Carriers can make this data available to customers through a web portal to facilitate customer network management, as is often done with Private Line or Frame Relay services.
