Problem Solving
Practical problem solutions
Equipment:
There is a possible chance that during production my equipment could have issues when I am trying to film.
Camera: DLSR cameras battery lives don’t last too long especially when I am out filming and have the camera on all of the time. It Is
important that when I am filming I must turn my camera off when I am not planning to start recording so that I don’t waste the
battery and can get as much footage as possible in that day. Another solution to this issue would be to just bring an extra battery with
me so that just before one runs out I can exchange the batteries and film for longer periods of time.
I will be using colleges Canon 600D cameras which we are given the camera with an SD card. These SD cards are used by other
students all of the time. An issue which I have had before in the past is that I have gone out and filmed using an SD card which is
almost full and so to avoid this issue happening it is important that before I go out with a camera, I should wipe all of the footage
already on it ready for me to use. Another solution to this would be to carry an extra SD card however this wont be easy as other
students may want to use that SD card during production time.
Storage:
There is a possible chance that there could be an issue of storage during production. As I want to include lots of different kind of
footage (images and video), It will mean that I will need lots of storage for all of my image and video files. The first place I will look to
use for my storage will be OneDrive as it is the easiest way of storing files where you can quickly load it up on multiple computers
plus, you are given so much of it allowing me to also organise my footage in folders. Alternatively, I could use a memory stick USB to
store my footage however that would be more expense to buy it if I want a good one with lots of storage.
Practical problem solutions
Ability
There are lots of styles and techniques which I want to use but don’t know how to do yet and so It is important
that I look at plenty of different tutorials to better my ability. YouTube for me will be the best source of tutoring
my knowledge when it comes to adobe premier pro as its got plenty of different step by step tutorials for every
style that I want to go for. When I use the 360 camera (insta360 one R), I will explore there website as they give
tutorials on different ways which I can use the camera and edit the footage using their own app.
Backing up (protect your data)
York college have data recent on the computers every time they shut for half term or have a holiday and so it is
important that I pre-anticipate this and save my work to either a OneDrive or USB instead of leaving it on my
computer desktop.
Theoretical problem solutions
Weather climate
For when I go to film in my planning I must plan days where the weather is correct as it would help set the correct tone which I am going for in the video. I mostly plan to film when it
is sunny however a problem is that it may be really hot for the crew(me) and my models causing us dehydration. In this case I will need to film during a time which isn’t prime heat
time(usually 13:00-16:00) which could be in the morning around 10:00am-12:00pm. If for some reason the weather changes on the forecast on a day which I plan to film to rain I will
need to film as little as I can outside in the open to avoid any damage to my equipment and clothes of my models. If for some reason the weather becomes windy it is important that I
try to film an enclosed area as I plan to film some audio which would be interrupted by the sound of the wind.
Actors and extras
For my actors and extras there are plenty of problems which could occur in production so I must give my self options to solve them. As we are currently coming out of a pandemic
there is a chance my models could catch COVID-19 or as we have been in lockdown, peoples immune systems will be weaker making them more prone to illness in which would
restrict me from being able to film them. My plan to solve this solution is that I will have 2 models ready of each fashion aesthetic when I go to film them that way if one of them falls
ill I still have a model who I can film for the documentary. I plan to use this solution as well in case any of my models have other commitments.
Locations
When I go out to film it is important that I analyse the areas which I plan to film in in case of any possible situations which could cause a problem for me while filming. Areas which I
plan to film are near a busy road in which I will need to make sure to secure the safety of me and my models when crossing it. There is an abandoned petrol station on Leeman Road
where I have an idea of filming at. This obviously has an exit and entrance which I could imagine a car may use to quickly turn around and so to avoid any Collison while I'm filming I
could put cones in the way so that it doesn’t happen. Another place which I plan to film is definitely Rowntree's park skate park which is open to the public. This can sometimes get
busy as people will want to use it so to avoid the business I will go to film at the skate park at a non-peak time between 17:00pm-19:00.pm. Obviously I will need to consider the
availability of my models for that day and so if I have to record at a busy time I will use another location in the area to film clips of them skating. Another location which I plan to film
at would be below the bridge at the park and ride. A potential problem with filming here would be that it is a public walk and drive way and so pedestrians and cyclists will be passing
frequently. In order to avoid any kind of collision with a cyclist I will have an extra crew member to come and look out of any potential bikes coming through as I wouldn’t be able to
reserve the space. I want to avoid having any random people in the video and so having someone to look out for me as I film will alert me in case a pedestrian will appear in shot.
Theoretical problem solutions
Finance
There will be expense for getting my models to the filming locations and refreshments on the day as there could be a
chance my models don’t have money to buy food or drink. It shouldn’t be too much as buses through York for
students are at a reduced price between 80p to £3 so I will have to budget for this from my monthly wages to ensure I
have enough to cater for all of my models.
Health & Safety
There will be no severe health and safety risks in the production of my project however there are a couple of things
which I may need to consider when going filming my documentary. As I plan to film in good sunny weather, this will
mean that me and my models may get dehydrated or nauseas especially if they are doing an activity with any kind of
movement for example, I want to film the my models skating, dancing and walking. A solution to the dehydration will
be to buy some packs of water out on my filming days to avoid that issue.
Time
I want to film as many fashion aesthetics as possible and see as many people as I can however in the time that I am
given I wont be able to do this so I will need to pick a sensible amount of models to film so that I don’t run of time to
film edit and then present the work. The solution is to reduce the amount of fashion aesthetic showcases because the
video concept would still be understandable and would also give me more time to focus on the showcases which I
have enough time to film.
Experiments 1: Showcase Experiment
https://youtu.be/63UKs5jFvg0
A big part of my documentary will be me showcasing my different models with their own personalized montage
which informs the audience on their personality and culture. I think that making a montage in this criteria will help
my audience be more engaged with the model themselves and the video entirely as they will be able to really see the
difference between all the youths fashion sense. In my experiment I filmed my friend Olivia as a model in the York
college car park and then edited her a montage in a way which I think can express her character. I also modelled
myself to attempt some effects which I could have used practice for. I have done this as some of my model's fashion
sense may not fit the liking of some of my audience and so I will be attempting to edit their montage in styles which
can be appreciated by all my audience to stop the toxicity in youth fashion
Experiments 1: Showcase Experiment
The first thing I plan my audience to see when the documentary begins will be a large title of my model's name
with a video of them behind the text and so I practiced this in my experiment. It is important that I put a
certain font, colour and animation for my different models to portray their personality so in my showcase
experiment with liv I search a tutorial on YouTube and added a neon text which has a small glitchy animation to
it. In the image of Olivia behind the text screen and throughout the showcase I have a colour overlay of purple
and pink as she is a feminine female, so it fits but also to show her interest in partying as the colour changes
like a club light setting which also relates to her interest in partying.
To fit the style of documentary that I am going for which is in a social media style to fit my target audiences
liking, Fast cutting is something which I have experimented with in this video as it is one of the main
techniques to engage a 16–24-year-old audience. I felt that including multiple angles of liv and her outfit would
give a better sight and perspective of what she was wearing which is important that I do in my documentary.
Multi-image is one of the video effects which I wanted to use in my showcases. It is a fun way of sequencing
still image shots within a video as it adds a completely different dynamic to the basic shots that I will be taking
for most of the documentary. It also gives me the opportunity to show the models outfit more clearly in any
way I want from any angle to my audience.
Experiments 1: Showcase Experiment
What I felt pieced by experiment well together and will piece my showcases in my documentary together will
be the music which I play in the background. It is important that I include relevant music to my model's culture
in the video and edit the montage to it to set the tone of the showcase. In my experiment I include the song
'count Contessa' by Azelia banks who is an artist which liv listens to in the modern dance music genre. I added
this specifically so that my audience get the party atmosphere tone while watching the video.
One of the simple tricks which are used quit in a lot of music videos ,which I will be taking inspiration from
when making my showcases, is the reverse effect which I played around with in my experiments as it is
something which I want to implement into my final project.
Experiments 2: 360 Camera footage
https://youtu.be/penLujv_1NE
For my documentary I was given the opportunity to use a 360 camera so I had to play around on it educate myself on its editing
software to see what sort of thing I could make with it ready for. The two things which I experimented with was the little planet angle
and the sphere effect.
I think that for aesthetically pleasing shots which the model isn't the focus, the little planet effect could be a nice shot that I go for as it
is so different from the regular camera shot which will be used throughout the documentary. This different dynamic will be used in
attempt to keep the audience engaged.
Similarly, to the little planet effect, the sphere effect on the 360 camera is an aesthetically pleasing shot which will keep the audience
engaged as it looks cool. What I tried to do when making my experiment was widen the POV so that you can see more of the setting
behind me holding the camera and my outfit in clear view. This could be useful for showing an outfit or a specific action on camera
