Designing for Mobile
A Wicked Design Challenge
The Goal
• By the end of this 45 minutes you will:
• Connect mobile learning with the instructional design process
• As a group come up with 2 – 4 Mobile Friendly Learning Activities and Resources
(MFLARs)
The Plan
• Introduction
• The experiment
• Demonstration
• Group Work
• Wrap up
Theoretical Anchors
• Universal Design
• Responsive Design
• ADDIE (the A specifically)
Why?
• More and more post secondary students are expecting to
access learning management systems with the device of their
choice - including mobile devices.
• Even though there are mobile apps for LMSs or responsive
display there are still some learning activities and resources that
are better for mobile learning than others.
What Is Your Experience?
• Have you observed students on their mobile devices?
• Do you consider mobile use when designing online courses?
The experiment
• Facilitating Learning Online - February / March 2017
• Blog at rcmckerlich.wordpress.com
• Also asked a fellow Edtech professional to conduct some tests
in Blackboard using a mobile phone.
The good
The Bad
The Ugly
What I learnt from the experiment
• There is value in stepping in the student’s shoes.
• Some learning activities and resources are better than others
when learning online using a mobile.
• Learning takes longer when learning online using a mobile.
• With proper design considerations learning with a mobile is
possible.
• Most mobile design challenges have a solution.
• Instructional design for mobile is quite detailed. You
have to go beyond the basic assumptions.
Demonstration – Volunteer needed!
• Using the mobile device of your choice, go to
rcmckerlich.moodlecloud.com
• Log In using etug2017 /etug2017
• Select ETUG 2017 Course.
• In the Discussion Forum “Tell Us About Yourself” follow the
instructions.
MFLARS
• Mobile Friendly Learning Activities & Resources
• Group Activity: Using the flipcharts provided work together to
come up with a list of MFLARs
Wrap Up
• What did we learn?
• Did we meet our goal?
• Connect mobile learning with the design process
• As a group come up with 2 – 4 MFLARs
