Workload Protection & Data Management in Multi-Cloud
Challenges with Common Approaches to Resiliency, Migration & Long-Term Retention
Organizations can move data to the cloud
• Using various protocols such as Object, Block, NFS and
CIFS/SMB.
• Capabilities such as StorageTiering enables performance and
cost optimization by moving data to Hot and Cool tiers.
• Policy based bi-directional data movement helps to bring back
hot data to on-premises storage
• Encrypted and secure stream of data sent to cloud

• Low cost, flexible alternative for
long-term data retention
• Eliminate the need for cumbersome,
time consuming tape management
• Cost-effective and resilient solution
that is scale-out (linear performance)
& elastic (grow/shrink with demand)
• Retain Deduplication across the
cloud vendors for better optimization

Data Location and Replication
• Microsoft	will	not	store	customer	data	outside	the	customer-
specified	geography	except	for	certain	regional	services
• Azure	replicates	data	both	locally	and	to	different	physical
locations
• Every	blob	is	replicated	across	three	computers	in	a	Microsoft
Azure	datacenter
• Geo-replicated	storage	in	a	datacenter	hundreds	of
miles	away
• Microsoft	may	transfer	customer	data	within	a	geo	(e.g.,	within
Europe)	for	data	redundancy	or	other	purposes
• Microsoft	does	not	transfer	customer	data	outside	of	a	geo	(e.g.

Workload Resiliency, Migration and Ongoing Portability
• Automated recovery and migration of single workloads through multi-tier.
• Customizable recovery and migration for complex environments.
• Service level objective driven approach through use of templates.
• Optimized data movement – gateway to gateway, offload impact from protected or
migrated assets, compression.
• Improved RTO’s – no data conversion – any to any data movement.
• Network customization.
• Pre migration or recovery automated and customizable rehearsals.
• Smart leverage of Azure resources – compute instantiated at recovery and migration,
mapping to right sized configuration.
Predictable, effective and flexible workload resiliency, one time migration and
ongoing portability to/for Azure
