Square pyramid
1. Pyramid having square as its base is called a square pyramid.
2. The volume of a square prism having base area a2 and height h is a2
h.
3. The volume of a square pyramid having base area a2 and height h is
𝟏
𝟑
a2 h.
The volume of a square pyramid having base area a2 and height h is
𝟏
𝟑
a2 h.
Student will be able to:
 Recall related knowledge and information about prisms
and pyramid.
 Apply the above concept in familiar situation.
 Accept the beauty of mathematical principle.
Square pyramid, square prism, equation for the volume of a square prism.
Glass chambers in the shapes of square pyramid and square prism, sand,
chart, ordinary class room equipments.
Classroom Interaction Procedure Response
After checking the previous knowledge of the students,
teacher enters into the topic.
Today we are going to learn how to find the volume of a
square pyramid. Can you give some examples of square
pyramids from our surroundings?
Then the teacher takes a glass chamber which is in the
shape of a square pyramid.
Look at this, this is a square pyramid. We have to find its
volume.
Square pyramid
Next the teacher takes a glass chamber which is in the
shape of a square prism and asks the students what is it?
square prism
This is square prism. We all know what is the volume os a
square prism having base area a2 and height h.
Students give examples.
Students answer correctly.
What is the volume?
The volume of a square prism having base area a2 and
height h is a2h
Now we are going to find out the volume of square
pyramid using the volume of a square prism. Look at
these two shapes, both of them have same base area and
same height. The only difference is that one is a square
prism and the other is a square pyramid.
The teacher calls a student and asks to find out the
volume of the square prism by measuring its base area
and height.
Next the teacher takes a cover of sand and calls another
student and asks to fill the sand in the square pyramid.
The student fills the squre pyramid with the sand. Then
the teacher suggested to pour that sand into the square
prism and to find out the volume of the sand by
measuring its base area and height.
Square pyramid
Now the volume of the sand indicates the volume of the
square pyramid.
Then the teacher asks to find out the relation between the
volume of squar pyramid and the volume of a square
prism.
Students answer correctly.
A student finds the volume.
Student finds the volume.
Students find.
REVIEW
1. What is the equation for the volume of a square prism having base area- and height h
2. What is the equation for the volume of a square pyramid having base area a2 and
height h
The volume of square pyramid is the one third of the
volume of a square prisum. That is the volume of a square
pyramid having base area a2 and height h is
𝟏
𝟑
a2h.
Again the teacher calls another student and asks to repeat
the same process twice.
After this process the square prism becomes filled with
the sand. The shows that the volume of the square prism
is thrice the volume of a square pyramid.
Next the teacher showa the chart.
Teacher allows the students to read the chart loudly.
Student does.
Students read the chart.
The Volume of a Square Pyramid
The volume of a square pyramid having base
area a2 and height h is
𝟏
𝟑
a2h.
FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITY
1. Find the volume of a square pyramid having base area 36 cm and height 10 cm.
2. Find the height of a square pyramid having volume 30 cm and area 9 cm.
