Data management comprises disciplines related to managing data as a valuable resource. Data processing involves collecting, organizing, and structuring raw data to produce useful information. It may involve validation, sorting, summarization, aggregation, analysis, reporting, and classification. Data security techniques protect data through encryption, software, hardware, backups, data masking, and erasure. A disaster recovery plan is a documented process to recover IT infrastructure in the event of a disaster.

- 2. Data Management Data management comprises all the disciplines related to managing data as a valuable resource.
- 3. Data Processing Data processing is, broadly, "the collection and manipulation of items of data to produce meaningful information." • Data is raw, unorganized facts that need to be processed. Data can be something simple and seemingly random and useless until it is organized. For example each student's test score is one piece of data. • Information is when data is processed, organized, structured or presented in a given context so as to make it useful, it is called information. For example the average score of a class or of the entire school is information that can be derived from the given data.

Data processing may involve various processes, including: • Validation – Ensuring that supplied data is "clean, correct and useful" • Sorting – "arranging items in some sequence and/or in different sets." • Summarization – reducing detail data to its main points. • Aggregation – combining multiple pieces of data. • Analysis – the "collection, organization, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data." • Reporting – list detail or summary data or computed information. • Classification – separates data into various categories.

A computer system may have several audit trails, each devoted to a particular type of activity.
