Although Springfield, Illinois was home to Abraham Lincoln, not everyone shared his views. Many
people were racist and prejudice toward the colored community. Not all of people s thoughts are
purely their own, some are given from peers, family, or the media. Newspaper media in Springfield,
Illinois during 1908 had such a large influence on the events and thoughts of the people, that they
essentially caused the Springfield race riot.
The Newspapers
In Springfield 1908, there were two major newspapers, The Illinois State Journal and The Springfield
Record. The Springfield Record and The Illinois State Journal were competitors during Abraham
Lincoln s presidential campaign. During 1908, both published racially intense stories and highlight
crime in black neighborhoods. Most of the white community who read newspapers with racially
intense stories were influenced by the words. Not everyone in Springfield supported Lincoln in
Springfield during the Civil War and his run for President. One major newspaper during the Civil War
and during the Springfield riots was The Springfield Journal. The Journal kept citizens up to date on
Lincoln s campaign. Every decision Lincoln made during his campaign was published in The Journal.
During the war and campaign, The Journal supported Lincoln but turned against his views when the

In O Brien s book when Ted Lavender died everyone was kind of sad in there own way. If it was just
saying what happened over and over again and annoying others by it , or just thinking it in their head ,
thinking it was their fault. When a soldier dies in war the others still alive become sad because the
person they were getting to know and their brother in a way just died right next to them, they had a
connection with each other and now it s gone. In Hardy s poem when he kills the other soldier, his foe

about himself or someone else in a war that happened before or an upcoming war that he was just

A Tale Intended to be After the Fact... is how Stephen Crane introduced his harrowing story, The Open
Boat, but this statement also shows that history influences American Literature. People wanted a
language and writing style that was distinctly American, different from Great Britain. Noah Webster
published Webster s American Dictionary of the English Language in 1828. Previously, words
pronunciations and spellings differed from area to area. In other words, people made up words and
wrote them however they liked. Webster s dictionary made American English more consistent, as well

I would like to apply for a summer internship position through the Gateway Internship Program, and
am particularly interested in the opportunities available in the fields of education and research.
