Editor's Notes

  • #2 Hi guys, we’re the Home Healthcare Tensegrity team, and we’re going to talk to you today about an application of NASA robotics to health care for the elderly.Alright, let’s get a show of hands: who here has grandparents who are still alive? Hmm, okay okay. What do you think is the biggest fear of your grandparents? Getting old, okay okay, maybe falling down, okay okay, what about death? Probably the biggest fear, right? Let’s see what market research tells us…
  • #3 Start with a question to the audi
  • #4 Start with a bang. SENIOR CITIZENS FEAR LOSING THEIR LOSING THEIR INDEPENDENCE MORE THAN DEATH. More than anything else, seniors want to stay independent as they grow older. They would prefer to die over moving into a nursing home, being forced to wear a diaper, and slowly losing their sanity.
  • #5 Start out with the big picture, set the stage. What is the magnitude of the “senior” problem? Why should we care? Is there money in it?
  • #6 We should focus on a specific story: where did the idea for this product actually come from? John came up with the idea….
  • #8 Nasa Technology vs User Needs
  • #9 Is this diagram too small/complex? We may need to dumb it down, tell me what you guys think. We can also go over it slowly, piece by piece. Try viewing this in slideshow mode, I added some animations. Our team interviewed patients and administrators in groups of two. One group member would conduct the interview and the other group member would take notes and provide assistance when needed.
  • #10 Doctors, architect, NASA experts Elderly, disabled“Nothing for us without us” DSP Director“I don’t want to feel old” Old person: “I tried living in a nursing home for six months and hated it. We don’t want to live with old people ever again.”Quote about dignity from coach of Chris Finn: “My dad fed me right after my accident. He pretended the fork was a bumblebee and buzzed it into my mouth. When I came off my ventilator, the first thing I told him was “Dad, if you do that again I’ll kill you!” [laughs].”
  • #17 We should focus on a specific story: where did the idea for this product actually come from? John came up with the idea….
  • #18 We built a tensegrity chair lift that eases users down into their chair and assists them in standing up. This product will increase seniors’ mobility and allow them to be more active, which in turn improves their health and helps keep them mobile. If you are interested in learning more about this product which has the potential to improve the lives of millions of seniors
  • #19 We built a tensegrity chair lift that eases users down into their chair and assists them in standing up. This product will increase seniors’ mobility and allow them to be more active, which in turn improves their health and helps keep them mobile. If you are interested in learning more about this product which has the potential to improve the lives of millions of seniors
  • #21 SAFEFixes a big problem for the user: falling down:. We might make want to make this the first and foremost bullet, since this is why our product exists: to make the common experience of standing and sitting safer, easier, and more empowering. In terms of safety, we can bring up quotes like one user’s biggest fear: falling. It could end her life, bring her to a hospital and pain. Another user’s husband fell, and no-one picked him up for over an hour. He had pneumonia and nearly died because he did not have the strength to pick himself up.INVISIBLEJust like a pair of glasses:You don’t notice it exists, you use it and it becomes a part of your environment. Our low-form-factor product fades into the background and lets you focus on the things you want to do.EMPOWERINGSo many users were tired of feeling old, like the lady who lived in a nursing home and hated it. We asked ourselves: how can we bring back that feeling of empowerment, of independence, of self-assurance and physical confidence, to our users? Our product is mechanically actuated by the user, no outside interaction necessary. The user can take charge of his own problem, and feel in control again.
  • #22 LCAAndrew, can you draft talking points for the LCA, in relation to Planet (3xBottomLine)? Seth and I agreed that you did a great job on it, and we’d love to include it in the final report. Questions for Andrew:What was the environmental impact? Should we keep the snarky bullet (“What environmental impact,” implying there isn’t any). Which phase had the greatest impact? How does the impact of our device compare to the impact of other common devices, like a wheelchair, or an employee (ie caregiver). Do we get environmental benefits compared to these? Can you put together statistics, graphs, or tables to that effect? How should we present these results? What key points should we hit?HOMEGROWN INNOVATIONBecause of the simplicity and common materials of our design, we can manufacture right here in the US of A. Although this decision would make the product more expensive, we could offset it by including environmental marketing in packaging of the project. Local manufacture would also reduce costs from transportation.SIMPLE MANUFACTURE = SIMPLE REPAIRSince we use common and inexpensive materials, we could use a streamlined and carefully designed manufacture process. If we use a modular design, the chair would also be easier to repair. Not only does this lead to lower and greener manufacture costs, but allows us to easily repair the chair, instead of merely having it replaced. We could use a service center and have the chair sent in.
  • #23 HUGE USER BASEAccording to the administration on aging (http://www.aoa.gov/Aging_Statistics/Profile/2012/2.aspx), 1 in 8 Americans are senior citizens (~40 million Americans). By 2040, this number is projected to double to almost 80 million Americans.GOVERNMENT SUPPORTThrough the Medicare (social security, $555 billion 2012) and Medicaid, the government spends over $500 billion a year on medical care for senior citizens. This number is expected to grow to over $700 billion by 2020. If we can put together a compelling proposal and tap into this market, we could be funded entirely by medical insurance, subsidized by the Americal government.UNDERSERVED MARKETDuring our interview with a volunteer and designer for Ashby Village, a local senior community, we learned about how poorly designed current devices are. The interviewee talked about his experience at a medical supply store, where they sell wheelchairs, handrails, and everything in between.Maybe bring in the success story of OXXO? Basically, by targeting a single pain point, painful kitchen utensils, they exploded in a market. This sort of thinking is even more necessary in the medical device market, as the market only gets ““Almost everything in [the] store needs to be redesigned. The wheel chairs and other products look like they are from the 1940s and they are all a bland, industrial color. Also, they are very, very expensive.””
  • #24 Josh: Let’s make these bullet points more concrete. This is a draft of what diagrams for the triple bottom line
