The US IPO market rebounded in 2009 after reaching its lowest level since the 1970s in 2008 due to the financial crisis. While IPO volume and proceeds increased from 2008, they remained below historical levels. IPO activity was near zero in late 2008 and early 2009 but picked up each quarter of 2009, with 35 IPOs in Q4. Financial services was the leading industry for IPOs in 2009, including the largest IPO, Banco Santander Brazil. Financial sponsor-backed IPOs also rebounded strongly after declining to almost zero in 2008.
