OBJECTIVE:
At the end of two hours discussion. 95% of the
Grade 9 students are expected to learn the
different usage a of adjectives.

“WHAT IS ADJECTIVE?’’
 An adjective is a word that modifies a noun
or a pronoun by limiting its meaning.
 An adjective may describe a noun or
pronoun by answering one of these
questions: What kind? Which one? How
many? How much?
 Examples: What kind?
 blue scarf
 artistic license
Which one?
 that attitude
 second try
How many?
 thirty pages
 several improvements
How much?
 Any trouble
 No mayonnaise
 Two verbs forms can also act as
adjectives; the present participle, which
ends –ing, and the past participle, which
ends in –ed or is irregularly formed.
Examples:
 a dancing hen
 the crumpled paper
 a broken dish
 Pronouns can also serve as adjectives.
For example:
 Possessive pronouns
(My,our,your,his,her,its and their) act as adjectives
when they modify nouns.
 Demonstrative pronouns
(this,that,these and those) can be considered
demonstrative adjectives when they modify nouns.
Examples:
 my kitten (possessive adjective)
 those bicycles (demonstrative adjectives)
 Lucy’s report (possessive noun acting as
adjective)
 Leather shoes (noun acting as adjective)
We have also the different adjectives that
compare. Many adjectives have different
forms to indicate their degree of comparison.
 Positive form- indicates no comparison.
 Comparative form- compares two nouns
or pronouns.
 Superlative form- compares more than
two nouns or pronouns.
 Articles are the adjectives a, an and the. A and
an are called indefinite articles. A is used before
consonant sounds, and an is used before vowel
sounds. The is called the definite article.
Example:
Indefinite articles
I wrote a play.
Ernesto wrote an article.
 Proper adjectives
A proper adjective is formed from a proper
noun and begins with a capital letter.
 “The suffixes that was used to form proper
adjectives: -an,-ian-n,-ese, and –ish.
Example class when we say America.
America itself is a Proper noun but when
we say American that is a proper
adjectives because American refer to the
People living in America.”
