This document provides an overview of the nitrogen cycle through four main processes:
1) Nitrogen fixation converts atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia through lightning, industrial fixation, or biological fixation by nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
2) Ammonification converts organic nitrogen sources into ammonium via bacteria.
3) Nitrification converts ammonium to nitrite and then nitrate through two steps with nitrifying bacteria.
4) Denitrification returns nitrogen to the atmosphere as nitrogen gas, closing the cycle, through denitrifying bacteria using nitrates instead of oxygen.
