8 th Grade Chapter 1 Lesson 7 Pgs. 50-57 For Student Use Only
Earth and the Moon Earth: The only planet that is suitable for life Positioned for right amount of light and heat Perfect atmosphere for maintaining life: Mostly Nitrogen with 20% oxygen Ozone layer (O 3 ) protects us from the harmful rays of the sun
Earth and the Moon Earth: Plenty of water (70% of Earth’s surface is covered in water) It is important that we protect and are good stewards of the world that was created for us, but there are also many “checks and balances” to keep the earth moving. For example: Watch water usage, not polluting, etc.
Earth and the Moon The Moon Our largest Satellite Satellite- an object that revolves around another object Reflects light from the sun Full of craters- (holes) Full of Marias- (seas)- these are seas of rock and are not as smooth as the look from Earth
Earth and the Moon Moon Has Rilles- (crevices or trenches) Had Mountain Ranges- these are huge and some are bigger than Mt. Everest
Earth and the Moon Moon Phases The moon revolves around Earth every 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes. This is a lunar month . The same side of the moon faces the earth at all times. Moon appears to change size and shape because different parts of the moon reflect or are hidden from the sun as the earth moves around the earth.
Earth and the Moon Moon Phases The moon waxes- gets bigger The moon wanes- gets smaller New Moon- when lit side of the moon is away from Earth Crescent Moon- think finger nail moon Quarter Moon- half moon Gibbous- bulging or bowl moon Full Moon- when we can see the entire lit face of the moon
Earth and the Moon Moon Special Moon Events Solar Eclipse: When moon blocks sun from Earth (only seen on a small portion of Earth’s surface) Lunar Eclipse: When the moon is full and the earth blocks the suns rays from reflecting off the moon.
Earth and the Moon Moon Moon’s gravitational pull creates tides: High tide- the water moves up the shore to its highest point Low tide- the water moves down the shore to its lowest point Spring tides: Happen at full and new moon, sun combines with moon to create extra high or extra low tides Neap tides: Happen at first-quarter and third-quarter moons, sun and moon work against each other (opposite angles) and tides are weaker
