A2 Media – G325 Critical Perspectives
Introduction to the exam and Question 1a
The critical perspectives exam – 2 hours
Representation
of British youth
Brief overview
Q1a. – Evaluate your skills development in a specific
area.
Q1b. – Evaluate one of your own media products in
relation to a key media concept.
Q2. – Respond to the given question, which will
allow you to discussion representations of British
youth
Question 1 (a)
Requires you to describe and evaluate your skills
development over the course of your production work,
from Foundation (AS) to Advanced (A2) Portfolio.
It will require you to adapt this to one or two specific areas from the
following:
Topics – Q1a
Topics – Q1b (to compare)
Past Questions
For each one, what do you describe, what do
you evaluate and what skill is relevant?
Exemplar task
Read the two sample answers and carry out the task.
Health warning – the examiners will not make a judgment on your
coursework based on what you say in your answer, it can’t affect your
coursework mark at all, and the quality of your methods will not affect
the exam mark.
Don’t read the examples and be concerned if either student’s research
and planning methods seem better than yours. The point is how well
they describe and evaluate them. A good description and evaluation of
bad methods can earn good marks.
Answers to the exemplar task
No surprises – the first one is a Level 4 with the full 25 marks (clearly,
the terminology makes references to some of the conventions
Goodwin and Vernallis identified). The second is level 2 with 14 marks.
Let’s talk about the key differences – in particular, what did the writer
of the second exemplar do wrong?
Without any teaching on this question, which do you think you would
write? What would your assumption be about what is required?
It is important to understand that we are evaluating the impact of the
things we did on the production, not how well we did them. The
second student only got as far as describing.
Evaluation Practice
Create a table for yourself like the one below to start thinking about
this response. Fill it in with as many examples as you can and evaluate
their impact on your production. A good tip for structuring the essay is
to use the chart as a visual aid to draw links between the years to show
the skills development.
AS Production – research
methods and use of real
media conventions.
AS Production – impact
on the finished piece
A2 Production – research
methods and use of real
media conventions.
A2 Production – impact
on the finished piece
Homework
So. . . At the moment, you have coursework to do.
But. . . The more times you practice writing a response for each
question option, get feedback and improve, the better your chances of
a good mark.
Therefore. . . You do have homework to write your own answer to the
given question options, but you don’t have a deadline as such. Get it
done as soon as possible, without taking the mickey.
