Ability of a Material to Sink and Float
Floating happens when an object is slowly and lightly going to the top surface of the water
and sinking is reaching and staying at the bottom.
NOT all objects sink nor float. Floating and sinking do not depend if objects are heavy or
light. This means that not all heavy objects sink and not all light objects float.
The objects occupied a space that was originally occupied by water. The amount of water
displaced depends on the mass of the object. Light materials displace less amount of water, while
heavy materials displace more amount of water. The total volume occupied by all the objects
immersed in water is the volume of the displaced water.

How is mass related to floating and sinking?
Mass is defined as the amount of matter. Because of its mass, matter has weight.
Weight is the pull of gravity toward the ground. Weight decreases in water, not because there is
no gravity. There is a force that is pushing an object opposite to the direction of gravity. Since gravity is
downward, there is an upward force. This upward force is the force of the water that depends on the
weight of the object. This force is responsible for the floating and sinking of objects

An object floats because its weight is balanced by the upward push of the water. This means
that if the weight of an object is less than the upward push of the water, it tends to float. if its weight is
greater than the upward push of the water, then it will sink Also, if the weight of the object is equal to
the upward push, the object will stay on the surface of the water. This upward push exerted by the
water on the objects immersed in it is called buoyant force. Buoyancy is the principle that describes
floating and sinking.


Matter is anything that has mass and volume.

The mass is the amount of matter present in a particular material.

Volume is the measure of the space occupied by matter.
When you describe the amount of matter in an object, you are describing its mass, and if
you want to know how much space is occupied by an object, you will get its volume.
Density is the amount of mass per unit of volume. The unit used to
express density is g/cm3 or kg/m3. The density of water is 1.0 g/cm3 or 103 kg/m3.

Example:
The salted egg sank deeper than the raw egg. The sugar-free soda floated higher than the
regular soda can. What does this mean?
Answer:
A material will sink if it is denser than water; it will float if is less dense than water.
