Adding Years
to life
LIVING LONGER
In the end, it's not the years in
your life that count.
It's the life in your years
- Abraham Lincoln
BeingAlive
PhysicalActivity
GoodRelationships
Most people die at 25…
They are just buried at 70…
“ “
BeingAlive
When was the last time…
You were alive?
When was the last time…
You watched a sunrise?
When was the last time…
You saw a full moon?
When was the last time…
You laughed?
When was the last time…
You saw a butterfly?
When was the last time…
You explored nature?
Being Alive
You can’t do anything about the
length of your life; but you can do
something about its width and depth

WEAK!
Exercise
 Regular exercise is one of the healthiest habits
 Promotes a happy, healthy and active living
 The earliest scientific study on exercise
 1960, Ralph Paffenbarger Jr, 52,000 men
 Men who exercised strenuously, burning 2,000 calories a week,
lived longer and healthier
Outdoor Vs Indoor Exercise
Adding Life to Years, not just Years to Life!
Adding Life to Years, not just Years to Life!
MVPA
 MVPA - Moderate Vigorous Physical Activity
 promotes
 life satisfaction and
 happiness
 especially in younger adults
+
 People who have one or more
close friendships are happier
 It’s not the quantity of our
relationships, but the quality that
matters
GoodRelationships
Harvard Study on Happiness
 The longest study of human development
 Started in 1938
 Ongoing - even after 75 years
 Some outcomes were revealed in March 2016
Adding Life to Years, not just Years to Life!
What makes a Good Life?
The commercial projection of a good life - wealth, fame, career
success - won’t bring health or happiness
What makes a Good Life?
 Happiness was related to
 the strength of your relationships with family, friends and
spouse
 Those satisfied in their relationships were
 happier
 healthier
 lived longer
 We generally don’t realise it, but we start to age from the
time we are born!
 We are all going to die. Let’s live until we die!
+
Other happiness routes
 To add “life” to years,
 be alive
 adopt a healthy lifestyle
 nurture social ties
 These are helpful too
 Acts of Kindness
 Spiritual Engagement
 Optimism
 Mindfulness and Gratitude
Add Life to Years
 As health care workers, we are at a great advantage
 As physiotherapists, you are even more so
 rehabilitation of the disabled
 pain relief & functional ability
 You add life to years of others too!
