Introduction
• An air handling unit is a device that
regulates and circulates air as part of a
heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning
system
• An AHU can improve the indoor air quality
and comfort, as well as the energy
efficiency of the HVAC system
• An AHU can be used for different
applications, such as large buildings, clean
rooms, laboratories, etc. 1
Components
• An AHU consists of various components, such as
fan, filter, coil, silencer, plenum, etc. 2
• The fan powers the air to expel it from the AHU to
the ducts that distribute the air throughout the
rooms
• The filter removes particles, viruses, bacteria,
odors, and other air pollutants from the air
• The coil heats or cools the air by transferring
temperature between coolant and air
• The silencer reduces the sound level of the
installation
• The plenum homogenizes the air flow
Types
An AHU can be classified based on factors
such as size, location, configuration,
airflow control, etc. 2
A small AHU that only includes an air filter,
coil, and blower is called a terminal unit or
a fan coil unit
A large AHU that conditions 100% outside
air and no recirculated air is called a
makeup air unit or a fresh air handling unit
An AHU that is designed for outdoor use,
typically on roofs, is called a packaged unit
or a rooftop unit
Energy
Efficienc
y
An AHU can reduce the energy consumption of
the HVAC system by having heat recovery units
that mix indoor and outdoor air in the exchanger
This reduces the temperature contrast between
the air and the coil, and therefore the climatic
contribution and energy consumption
An AHU can also use variable air volume control
to adjust the airflow according to the demand
This reduces the fan speed and power
consumption when less airflow is needed
Conclusion
AN AHU IS A DEVICE THAT REGULATES
AND CIRCULATES AIR AS PART OF AN
HVAC SYSTEM
AN AHU CAN IMPROVE THE INDOOR
AIR QUALITY AND COMFORT, AS WELL
AS THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF THE
HVAC SYSTEM
