Al-Qaeda is a global militant Sunni Islamist organization founded in 1988 by Osama bin Laden and Abdullah Azzam. Its goal is to drive US influence from Muslim nations and establish strict sharia law. It operates as a decentralized network and has conducted numerous terrorist attacks against Western targets since the 1990s from its base in Afghanistan under the Taliban. The US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 following the 9/11 attacks forced al-Qaeda to relocate. Osama bin Laden, the leader and founder of al-Qaeda, was killed by US forces in Pakistan in 2011.
Al-Qaeda is a global militant Islamist organization founded in the late 1980s. It emerged during the Soviet-Afghan War, aimed at global jihad and strict sharia law.
Various international bodies, including the UN Security Council, NATO, EU, UK, and US, have been involved in anti-Al-Qaeda efforts.
Bin Laden declared war on the U.S. in 1996, establishing ties with radical groups to drive U.S. presence from Muslim nations and destroy Israel.
Al-Qaeda aims to unite Muslims and initiate a 'Holy War'. It is known for its extensive planning of major terrorist attacks, notably 9/11.
Osama Bin Laden, the founder, was born in 1957, killed in 2011 by U.S. forces. His death was significant, marked by military operations and swift burial.
Mohammed Atef, Al-Qaeda's military chief, was born around 1944/1953, killed in U.S. airstrikes in 2001 during the Afghanistan invasion.
The first attack occurred in Yemen in 1992. The most significant attack occurred on 9/11/2001, resulting in nearly 3,000 deaths and targeting iconic US structures.
