INTRODUCTION
Maritime trade is an activity that involves the transportation of goods and
people on a body of water. It used to be conducted by ships traveling on open seas, but
with the advent of globalization, seaways have become more bustling. The global
economy has evolved into a massive interdependent system where all countries
participate in many facets of our lives. One way for this system to function effectively is
for each country to have a strong maritime industry which is capable of offering food
products and energy sources, as well as creating jobs.
To find the answer to the question – How do they contribute to more trade,
investments and opportunities? We have used our own analysis methods to analyze
cargo and tanker traffic data over 14 days and over two years. Also, it is evident that
when comparing containerized cargo and tanker movements conveyed by vessels of
different sizes (from bulk carrier to container vessel) both have various advantages like
enhanced speed (containerized cargo), reduced turnaround time (containerized cargo),
etc.

OBSERVATIONS
● For the data of 37 countries, Singapore stands out with its capacity to handle 2
million vessels across the span of 2 years. With a population of 5.45 million, it
has harnessed its technological and geographical advantages- to improve its
trade and economy. It gets a majority of its vessels from the pleasurecraft
category
● Australia has the largest passenger vessel traffic inflow. Since it is the world’s
largest island continent with a coastline of 34000 km, it receives more 700,000
vessels.
● Bahrain has rich oil reserves ( depleting ) but also has its traditional fishing
industry to support its economy. With 161 km of it’s coastline,
● Indonesia, UAE, Thailand are upcoming Asian economies with a huge
potential in sea borne cargo freight.
● Majority of the countries have less than 1% of port per coastline (in km) except
for Iraq.
SOLUTIONS
● Optimized cargo & tankers over passengers and fishing. The ROI on cargo &
tanker trade weighs in more than passenger ferrying.
● Countries should prioritize seatrade over seafarming
● Countries with private ports have better capacities, more open trade and
investments as compared to ones with a central authority.
● Ports could look towards diversifying their existing locations and shift towards
more hybrid locations for trade and transfer of goods.

OBSERVATIONS & SOLUTIONS
INDIAN PORTS
● Among the 4 nations, India handles largest numbers of vessel and is only
after Australia
● Out of the given 13 ports in India, 6 ports are possessed by the Adani
group(MUNDRA, KRISHNAPATNAM, KATTUPALLI, DIGHI, DHAMRA, DAHEJ)
along with major terminals in ports like HAZIRA, MORMUGAO,
VISHAKAPATNAM
● Mumbai port and Hazira port together contribute to around 54.9 percent of
vessel business from the given port data which is more than rest 11 ports
combined
● Chennai Port constitutes to be one of the largest artificial ports in India after
Mumbai but still, it has the lower business of vessels than Mundra port
because of the advanced or higher trading and running price of vessels at the
port
● Sum of Tug is highest in Hazira Port(in fig XXXX) because Hazira harbourage
substantially handles cargo including bulk, break-bulk, bulk liquid chemicals,
petroleum products & edible oil painting, containers, automotive, and crude
for which tugging boats become most essential to move mega ships closer to
port
● APSEZ aims to be the first global carbon-neutral port company by 2025 with
the entire harbourage weight operations powered by renewable energy. The
company’s aggressive approach towards net zero in the alternate half of the
decade has come most important factor in boosting India’s Maritime Sector
Australia’s Maritime is heavily dependent on Tourist, Mostly contributed by it’s
port in Sydney. We can also see the number of pleasure craft is also
significantly higher, that too mostly contributed by its port in Sydney.
● Total transportation of tankers in Australia is also comparatively low compared
to other countries, which shows its self sufficiency.
● Although Australia is Surrounded by ocean from all sides, India’s Cargo
transportation is a lot higher comparatively.
