BACK COVER
• Nicki Minaj’s very pink front cover
emblems a very feminine attitude
to the album. The name ‘PINK
FRIDAY’ themes in with the pink
background, costume and
appearance.
• Even though the colour pink
connotes to a proper, girly,
feminine stereotype. The genre of
this music actually contradicts
this as the music is infact rap.
It is noticeable that her legs
were computer animated or
edited digitally as they lack
the basic human form.
It is almost as if it was
purposefully edited in this
way to portray an image of a
‘Barbie doll’. Again adding to
the innocent and feminine
theme.
• Also, linking to the
Barbie idea, it
portrays an image of
a ‘perfect, flawless’
model. It conforms
to the representation
of females wanting
to always look
perfect. And here,
the edited legs are
shown and grabs the
attention of the
viewer.
• The expression on her
face is quite ‘shocked’
but is also quite doll-looking.
It almost makes
her look like a
mannequin. Again, this
conforms to the idea that
females are always
wanting to look a certain
way – (flawless, perfect
etc)
• Her posture on the
floor is almost seen
as seductive. Her
torso is raised and
her legs are quite
spread out and cover
most of the space
around her. This
conforms to a
general
representation of
females being sexual
objects in society.
The wig, the costume and overall appearance is
very conforming to the stereotypical albums of
the pop culture. From her appearance and the
extravagant costume in this album and her
facial expressions it suggests something loud,
exciting, fast-paced. It can be quite obvious to
the audience that her music is of a pop genre.
• This CD cover especially looks like
a lot of merchandising of the
‘Barbie’ dolls. The pink is a
constant theme throughout this
digipak and the image of her on
the CD is very resembling to the
appearance of Barbie.
• It is very doll like and even her
‘frozen’ facial expression
resembles this highly.
• It is seen on many CD’s a print of
the artist’s face covering it as well
as the album title and artist name
stated.
• The colouring of the CD is very
simple. Almost all of the digipak is
pink and white. It gives a very
calm, girly feeling. However, it of
course juxtaposes with the true
content of the album and the
songs.
Here, her posture
is very proper and
almost elegant.
Since her chin is
up and she is
looking up, it
almost resembles
the look of royalty
– an appearance
that resembles
importance.
Her body is quite revealing
in this costume from her
chest and her legs. It again
hints on the idea of females
being sexual objects and
attracts a male gaze.
The pinkness
and girliness of
the album is
appealing to
females who are
willing to buy
this album.
Perhaps her
body being on
show could be a
reason to why
males would be
interested in
Nicki Minaj and
buy her album.
‘I’m The Best’ is the first song on the song
list. I find that this resembles as a good
caption to the photo on the back cover.
Her positioning of her hand is very royal-like
and suggests her personality
resembling authority and importance.
She clearly
stands out
from the
pristine
background
colours and
simplicity of
the album
covers. The
attention is of
her throughout
this digipak
which is seen
in most album
covers of pop
artists.
