Selecting final shot
After deciding on which photo I felt was best, for reasons such as it
describes the type of characters through their body language. I began
to edit on Photoshop.
Starting editing
Since my TV series characters are the main attraction of the cover, I
wanted the headlines for them to be the ones which stand out the
most. I did this by making them a brighter colour and larger. I
needed some other headlines not related to my series, given most
magazines do feature pages unrelated to what's on the cover, so
decided to choose one about recent events.
Experimenting with
background
I then decided to experiment, changing the position and size of some
headlines, I made the ones related to my series larger and
repositioned. I also then decided to get rid of the background, so
began to edit it out.
Adding further headlines
After this I needed to figure out a name for my magazine so decided on 'Online TV
Choice'. As well as this I decided to add a graphic element to the name, adding a world
logo to replace the O. I also had fully edited out the background and replaced it with a
plain brown colour. I also went over the edges of my characters with the brush tool so
the outside of them dint have such a red tint. My characters now stood out more. It also
adds extra focus onto my headlines, with them being in colour they also are shown to
be more eye catching then the bottom left news one. I also decided to add more
elements of actual magazines, many offer specific gifts like posters to make customers
want them more, so I decided to state that on either the top or bottom of my cover.
Lessening the wide use of
colour
I started looking again at other magazine covers and saw a common
convention was the use of texture backgrounds. I decided this would help
my cover look more realistic and less bland so went out and took some
photographs of close ups of walls and pathways. After process of
elimination I chose the one I felt was best and added it in. I also felt there
was too much colour within the texts and so decided to try turn the blue to
red.
Texture background
With the background I had experimented with making it both lighter
and also darker, I preferred the use of making it darker as it helps
make the characters and text pop out, as well as represent the theme
of the show.
Editing texture background
I also felt that the the title needed to have its colour changed, as well as the
name. I felt like it had to be one word instead. I also need to replace two of
the headlines with something not relevant to the series, in most magazine
covers they have headlines about recent events. I also have to add in a bar
code and potentially the date. I am also considering bringing the 'free
poster inside' back up to the top.
Further background editing
I continued to darken the background and replace the headline and it
is time to receive audience feedback
Audience feedback 1
Following the feedback I have received I have been watching some
tutorials on YouTube and looking at more magazines online and am
going to try edit it to perhaps darken the background, but also part
of the characters with a shadow effect. I also must add an issue
number and date.
Adding in extra effects
After further research into YouTube tutorials I have figured out how to
create the shadow effect, I am also thinking of removing the yellow from
the poster and have the writing in only three colours being white, red and
black. This will also follow magazine conventions which more often show
only two to three colours for the writing, some have four but it is rarer. I
feel I need to change the position of either the issue number or date.
Adding finishing touches
I have now applied the shadow effect, changed the colour of the
headlines and also changed the smaller headlines to TV based topics.
I further went with my shadow effect by editing the two headlines at
the bottom to fit the theme. I have repositioned the date as well. I
feel I should now get more audience feedback.
Audience feedback 2
Following the latest audience feedback being mainly positive I am
going to stick with this new design. I feel that I am going to attempt
to darken the characters more and try edit more around them so
they don't pop out as much. I am also going to experiment by trying
to edit one of my characters more in-front of the other and darken
the one behind.
Finishing
I feel it is nearly completed I just need to do a few finishing touches, I think
I may see how the top banner will look more angled and smaller, I like how
the circle looks as it follows some conventions as I have seen it in use in
others. I am going to stick with having one character in-front and other
than that I am feeling very happy with it.
My end product.
