The Origin And Nature Of
Angels
I. The Origin of Angels
I. The Origin of Angels
A. Original Creation
B. Original Condition
A. Original Creation
• Christ created all the angels (Romans 8:38;
Eph. 6:12; Col. 1:16)
• The angels were created before the earth was
created. This is inferred from Job 38:4-7 when
“all the sons of God” sang with joy at the
creation of the earth (see also Job 1:6; 2:11).
• Their purpose is to glorify God (Col. 1:16; Rev.
4:6-11)
Colossians 1:16
“For by Him (Christ) all things were
created that are in heaven and that are
on earth, visible and invisible, whether
thrones or dominions or principalities
or powers. All things were created
through Him and for Him.”
B. Original Condition
• The were created as free moral agents, good
and holy (Mark 8:38)
• They lived in a positively holy atmosphere
where they enjoyed the presence of God
(Matthew 18:10)
• They lived in the heavenly environment
(Mark 13:32)
B. Original Condition (Cont.)
• They had great privileges in that they dwelt
with God and were “sons of God” in the sense
that they were direct creations of God.
• They have certain limitations in space, power,
authority, intellect, and holiness, yet they are
incredible in their abilities.
• They are responsible to God as creatures
answering to the Creator.
Time for a little levity…
Okay, back to angels…
II. The Nature of Angels
II. The Nature of Angels
A. Their Personality
B. Their Properties
A. Their Personality
1. Intelligence
2. Emotions
3. Will
1. Intelligence
• They had knowledge of man’s prayers and future
events among men as revealed by God (Luke 1:13-
16)
• They have limited knowledge of God’s plan for the
world as informed by God (Rev. 10:5-6; 17:1-18)
• They are intelligent enough to carry out His wise
and great tasks (Mark 13:27); Hebrews 1:7,14)
1. Intelligence (Cont.)
• They perceive the purposes of men on
occasions (Matthew 28:5)
• There are things they do not fully
understand, such as our redemption and the
humility of Christ in His incarnation (1 Peter
1:10-12)
2. Emotions
• They respond to God’s power and wisdom
in joy (Job 38:7)
• They worship God with a deep sense of awe
and humble reverence (Isaiah 6:3)
• They rejoice when a sinner repents (Luke
15:10)
Luke 15:10
“Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in
the presence of the angels of God over
one sinner who repents.”
3. Will
• God appeals to their wills by commanding
them to worship Christ (Hebrews 1:6)
• Lucifer and the other angels willfully
rebelled against God while other angels
decided to serve God (typologically taught
in Isaiah 14:12-15; cf. also Rev. 12:4)
B. Their Properties
1. Spirit Beings
2. Special Appearance
3. Spiritual Wings?
1. Spirit Beings
• Scripture does not directly attribute bodies to
angels
• Some hold that they have bodies made of
refined matter or material different from
humans (cf. 1 Cor. 15:44); others say a
spiritual body
1. Spirit Beings (Cont.)
• They are sometimes described as men
** A masculine pronoun is used of them
(Mark 16:5-6)
** When they appear, they generally take
the form of a man (Genesis 18:2,22; 19:1;
Daniel 10:18)
• Their lifespan is not subject to death (Luke
20:36)
2. Special Appearance
• They are normally invisible (Col. 1:16) but
can appear according to the will of God
(Luke 1:11-13; 26-29):
**To Joseph in a dream (Matthew 1:20)
**To Isaiah in a vision (Isaiah 6:1-8)
**To Elisha and his servant (2 Kings 6:17)
2. Special Appearance (Cont.)
• They caused mental and emotional agitation
to Mary (Luke 1:29, 34)
• They caused mental and physical weakness
to the Roman guards who saw the stone
from Christ’s tomb being rolled away
(Matthew 28:4)
Matthew 28:2-4
“ . . . Behold there was a great
earthquake; for an angel of the Lord
descended from heaven, and came and
rolled back the stone from the door and
sat on it. His countenance was like
lightning, and his clothing as white as
snow. And the guards shook for fear of
him, and became like dead men.”
These are frightening beings!
» It’s unfortunate that modern notions of
angels are something like this…
» Cute figurines to be sure, but not exactly the
powerful heavenly beings we read about in
Scripture!
3. Spiritual Wings?
• The seraphim are described as having six
wings (Isaiah 6:2,6)
• The cherubim had four wings (Ezekiel 1:5-8)
• Gabriel was “caused to fly swiftly” to Daniel
(Daniel 9:21)
• The apostle John saw the angel of judgment
“fly in the midst of heaven” (Revelation
14:6)
3. Spiritual Wings (Cont.)
• Do all angels have wings?
**We cannot say with certainty
**These may be pictures simply to convey
the angel’s swift, obedient service.
What do You Enjoy
that Angels do not Enjoy?
• There are some things angels do not fully
understand, such as our redemption and the
humility of Christ in His incarnation (1 Peter
1:10-12) . . .
1 Peter 1:10-12
“Of this salvation the prophets have
inquired and searched carefully, who
prophesied of the grace that would come to
you . . . To them it was revealed that, not to
themselves, but to us they were ministering
the things which now have been reported
to you through those who have preached
the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent
from heaven—things which angels
desire to look into.”
• Angels do not know
what it is like to be
born again. They
have not
experienced
redemption.
