Cancer is caused by uncontrolled cell growth and can spread throughout the body. There are over 100 types of cancer. Treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and immunotherapy. Surgery is curative for many solid tumors if all cancer cells are removed. Radiation therapy uses x-rays or gamma rays to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy uses drugs to target rapidly dividing cells and can be used for cancers that have spread. Hormonal therapy and immunotherapy are newer targeted biological therapies. The goal of treatment is to remove or destroy cancer cells while limiting side effects to normal cells.
