AbstractAbstract
Security of parked vehicles is of prime concern in these
days. A simple and cost effective vehicle tracking system which
uses the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global System for
Mobile Communication (GSM) technologies and a Smartphone
application for tracking of any movable asset. Using smart phone
application the user can track the stolen vehicle.
IntroductionIntroduction
At present, the usage of vehicles is very usual in our daily
life. As the usage increases, the need to secure them is being a
challenging task. So the need of security and monitoring is
developed. To resolve such problems, a tracking system is
developed using GPS and GSM technologies namely vehicle
tracking system.
Vehicle Tracking System (VTS) is a reliable technology
that is used to track status of a vehicle using technologies like
Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and other radio navigation
systems operating through satellites and ground stations.
The vehicle tracking system features are;
 Acquisition of a vehicle's geographical coordinates and a
vehicle’s unique ID from an in-vehicle device in real time using
the GPS module.
 Transmission of a vehicle's location information and a vehicle’s
ID to a web server after a specified time interval using the
GSM/GPRS module.

• It consists of two units one is transmitting unit (vehicle unit) and
other one is monitoring unit.

A. Arduino Microcontroller:-
The Atmega328 based Arduino UNO R3 microcontroller is used as
the brain to control the vehicle tracking system.
B. GPS module:-
GPS module and a GPS receiver are adopted to implement the in-vehicle
device. The GPS module has the GPS receiver with antenna. There are two
slide switches and one push button switch.
C. GSM/GPRS module:-
The GSM/GPRS module is responsible of establishing connections
between an in-vehicle device and a remote server for transmitting the
vehicle’s location information.
The various frequencies used in GSM module are EGSM 900MHz,
DCS 1800MHz and PCS 1900MHz.
1) GSM Module is powered using 12Volts DC adapter.
2) Arduino is powered using USB cable / Adapter.
3) 0th pin of Arduino is connected to TX pin in GSM module.
4) 1st Pin of Arduino is connected to RX pin of GSM Module.
5) Arduino GND is connected to GSM GND.

1.The Vcc pin of GPS is connected to 3.3v pin of arduino.
2.The TX pin of GPS is connected to PWM output pin of arduino(3rd
pin).
3.The RX pin of GPS is connected to PWM output pin of arduino(4th
pin).
4.The GND pin of GPS is connected to GND pin of the arduino board.

The connections which are done for LCD are given below:
–PIN1 or VSS to ground of
–PIN2 or VDD or VCC to +5v power
–PIN3 or VEE to ground
–PIN4 or RS (Register Selection) to PIN0 of ARDUINO
UNO
–PIN5 or RW (Read/Write) to ground (puts LCD in read
mode eases the communication for user)
–PIN6 or E (Enable) to PIN1 of ARDUINO UNO
–PIN11 or D4 to PIN8 of ARDUINO UNO
–PIN12 or D5 to PIN9 of ARDUINO UNO
–PIN13 or D6 to PIN10 of ARDUINO UNO
–PIN14 or D7 to PIN11 of ARDUINO UNO

The MAX232 is an integrated circuit that converts signals
from a TIA-232 (RS-232) serial port to signals suitable for
use in TTL-compatible digital logic circuits.
The MAX232 is a dual transmitter / dual receiver that
typically is used to convert the RX, TX, CTS, RTS signals.

1. You can locate your stolen vehicle easily using your mobile
without any extra cost.
2. It can be used for trucks carrying valuable goods, to keep
track of the status of delivery and location of truck all times.
3. The device ensures vehicle security and smooth fleet
management.
4. You can easily install it in any vehicle such as cars, boats and
motorbikes. An SMS will inform u whether the vehicle is
stationary or in the move.
5. You can also use it to keep tab on your driver. It reduces
vehicle abuse and ultimately results in significant cost-
savings for individuals, fleet owners and the like.
