According to Maori tradition, Rangi (Heaven) and Papa (Earth) were the original ancestors who clung closely together in the darkness. They had six sons: Tane-mahuta who created forests; Tawhiri-ma-tea who created winds; Tangaroa who created fish and reptiles; Tu-matauenga who created humans; Haumia-tiktiki who created uncultivated food; and Rongo-ma-tane who created cultivated food. After a battle between the sons, Tu-matauenga ate four of his brothers but spared Tawhiri-ma-tea, explaining modern human fierceness, eating habits, and storms.
