Peter Mock and John German were automotive engineers who discovered that Volkswagen was rigging emissions tests using illegal software. They conducted road tests that found Volkswagen cars emitting pollution 35 times over the legal limit. As whistleblowers, they reported Volkswagen to regulators, sparking investigations. Volkswagen was found to have installed defeat devices in 11 million cars to cheat emissions tests. Mock and German's actions forced Volkswagen to admit wrongdoing and recall millions of cars, causing major damage to the company's reputation, stock price, and leadership. However, as they were not employees, Sarbanes-Oxley whistleblower protections did not apply to Mock and German.
