a lot of contacts between human and immoral, the relationship between Athena and Odysseus, which
make me interesting, also this is important for the story. The relationship between Athena and

In this passage, Odysseus is arrogant because he blames everything on his crew. He is very self–
centered and very obnoxious to his men. Odysseus doesn't know his own faults while he recognizes
other people's flaws and Odysseus reacts harshly to his crew member's flaws. Odysseus blames his

Odysseus Is A Hero
In book 12 of The Odyssey by Homer Odysseus is portrayed as a hero. In the story he is told by
Circe that he will find an island with many cattle. She also states that if him or his men eat these
cattle he will only return to Ithaca after all his men die. Odysseus warns his men of this and says
"Each one of you must take a solemn oath that if he meet with a herd of cattle or a large flock of
sheep, he will not be so mad as to kill a single head either, but will be satisfied with the food that
Circe has given us." Odysseus is a hero because he is able to resist the temptation of killing the cows
because he knows it is best for everyone. However, his crew is not able to resist and eat the cattle.

When Odysseus left for the Trojan War, he had to leave his wife Penelope, his son Telemachus, and
his parents. Odysseus has a very strong bond with his wife that could never be broken. Penelope and

Hunger is seen throughout the Odyssey from the suitors trying to gain the power that Odysseus has
when he is gone, the hunger of Odysseus's men, and the hunger for power and stability in the

what Eumaeus has explained, Penelope's loyalty is emphasized since she has ignored the ignorant

Right when Telemachus was about to head home, the gods sent a sign: an "eagle swooped down
from the crags where it was born and bred... snatched that goose fattened up for the kill inside the
house"(15.194–196). Helen interpreted the sign and explained that "just so, after many trials and
roving long and hard, Odysseus will descend on his house and take revenge–unless he's home
already, sowing seeds of ruin for that whole crowd of suitors"(15.197–200) This made Telemachus

Odysseus and his crew settled down inside the cave and waited for the cyclops to return. When he
returns to the cave they plead to him to let them be a guest in his home and tell him that Zeus
protects them, but the cyclops does not fear the gods so he kills two of the crew and keeps the rest as

Empathy In The Odysseus
Empathy in the odyssey We often think that we are a caring and kind person but when we become
tired, stressed, or rushed all empathy we have can seem to vanish. We start to put our own needs
first and others second. But what if we weren't always like this? The odyssey is a perfect example of
what happens when we don't have empathy for others. In book 9 Odysseus and Polyphemus fail to
understand each other leading to some unfortunate results. Polyphemus shows almost no empathy in
his interaction with Odysseus but he shows even less, showing that without empathy pain is
inevitable. Odysseus first displays a great lack of empathy for the cyclops when comparing how
different his lifestyle is to Polyphemus'. For example when describing how the Polyphemus lives he

Why does Odysseus see himself in those delusions? In my perspective, Odysseus, the ruler of Ithaca
and a Greek ruler of Troy, is such a character that does not seem as delusional as Ajax, yet there are
some characteristics within him, which consequently make him view himself as delusional.
Unfortunately, completing this question thoroughly was quite difficult, as Odysseus did not provide
many statements. Nonetheless, to begin with, in comparison to Ajax, this ruler does not allow his

one point in the story to another. When reading "The Odyssey" an epic poem by Homer, we see that
our protagonist, Odysseus, changes throughout the course of the novel. This essay will argue how he

In classical literature, heroes are normal people that have a certain trait or quality that distinguishes
them from everyone else. In The Odyssey, Odysseus captivates the audience with his cleverness,
heroism, and cunning, but away at Ithaca lies a dormant neglected, and powerful character,
Penelope. Penelope isn't the classical hero, she does not slay great beasts or liberate cities, but in her
own right, she proved to be equal, if not greater than the great Odysseus. Through her cunning,

There are several traits and qualities that made Odysseus the character and hero he is and because of
his circumstances, he could put those on display. In his dilemma with Polyphemus, he had to use his
cleverness and intelligence to trick cyclops so he could escape from the cave. He also maintained
vigilance. After Circe warned him, in book 12, that if he hoped to survive he would have to sacrifice
some of his men he scoffed at the idea and instead tried to save and protect them on. He failed of
course, but despite his shortcomings, it is very commendable because he very well could have
simply saved himself, but he shows strong character as he tried to maintain a certain level of

Reflection Of Odysseus
Trying to decipher a person is a difficult task, perhaps impossible. We can, however, observe their
actions, their experiences and their resemblance to other people to make some progress in
comprehending them. Deciphering Odysseus is especially strenuous, for he is shown as a crafty liar
who tricks others to get what he wants. Additionally, we cannot tell where the truths end and the lies
begin. Consequently, we might not be able to wholly answer who Odysseus is but if we are to
understand the Odyssey, we first have to understand Odysseus.
Homer has constructed Odysseus as a complex character who is capable of molding himself into
different forms to get the best out of his surroundings. Despite this complexity, Homer has given us
enough clues to be able to recognize his actions. Of these clues, some are explicit and obvious,
others are implied and can be deduced via his speeches and his acts. The explicit ones are easy, he is
described to be, among other things, wise, kind and resourceful. The proofs of these can be seen
numerous times in the text and thus be taken at face value. The real difficulty starts when we move
past the explicit to the implicit.

has been written about for millennia. Homer composed an epic poem entirely about him. Dante
wrote about Odysseus while describing his journey through the afterlife in Inferno. These two
writers, though describing the same man, portray him in different lights – Homer lauding him as a
valiant hero and Dante condemning him to burn for eternity. Each portrayal is a product of the
different times in which the two authors lived. Through how the two authors abbreviate, augment,

Whereas Homer's Odysseus receives a seat of honor at the table of a foreign king, Dante's spends
eternity burning in cramped quarters.
In each portrayal of Odysseus, the two differ not only in how he is viewed, but what the reader gets
to view about him. Curiously absent from the Odyssey is the account of how the Trojan War really
ends. Homer had already dedicated one epic to the War, and then tells the return from it in this epic,
but does not give the reader the closure of explaining how it ended. An obvious reason is how the
deed of capturing the city with the Trojan Horse was less than heroic. Homer valued the in–your–
face toughness of the andres of the ancient world, and in his epics spares no detail in describing
many Greeks and Trojans to paint them as he–men. His failure to include the fall of Troy in the
Odyssey is no accident, and stems from the fact that the strategy by which it occurred runs counter
to the values of classical heroism. In Homer's Greece, a real man would not have to trick his
enemies to defeat them. The omission is a concession by Homer to admit that Odysseus was not
nearly heroic as Achilles and that there is no virtue in dishonesty.
While Homer brushes the fall of Troy under the rug, Dante harps on it to the extent that the Horse
becomes the reason Odysseus burns in one of the deepest parts of Hell.

Cyclops and he said Polyphemus , when he asked for Odysseus name he said "Nobody" and stated
that's what everyone back home calls him. Then Odysseus had offered to share his whine that he had
brought on his ship. He waited for the Cyclops to get intoxicated and fall asleep. That's when he and
all this men shoved the burning wooden staff in his eye.

Odysseus Downfall
By putting his men in constant danger, resulting in all of his men dying, Odysseus demonstrates the
hallmark of a dreadful leader. In the episode The Cyclops, Odysseus leads his men into the cave of
polyphemus looking for a fight, because polyphemus is the child of Poseidon. In the process of
looking for a fight he loses quite a few men to the Cyclops, and after escaping continues to egg
polyphemus on by yelling in triumph at the Cyclops. Which almost leads to the crews demise. After
the Cyclops defeat Odysseus boasts, "' O Cyclops! Would you feast on my companions?... How do
you like the beating we gave you, you damned cannibal?" (The Cyclops. 476). This demonstrates
Odysseus being a dreadful leader because he puts his men into the danger of being killed by the
Cyclops, and risking their lives by proudly boasting to Polyphemus after himself and the crew have

reality, it is more than than that. A hero is someone who fights for what they believe in, they are
courageous, fight for the greater good, and above all, would sacrifice their life to save the lives of
many. For example, in The Odyssey, a hotshot is shown in the life of Odysseus. While many believe
Odysseus was a great figure and leader, he was far from that. He failed his crew, and for one reason
only, he was not the chieftain his men needed. More specifically, the results leading to the
announcement that Odysseus was not an epic hero was mostly due to his personality. Odysseus did
not value the opinions of his men, or lives of his men, as the reader was lead first to believe. "Why
not take these cheese, get them stowed, come back, throw open all the pens, and make a run for it?
We'll drive the kids and lambs abroad" (Homer 8). While in the land of cyclopes, Odysseus' men
told him to leave the cave and take all of the cyclops' belongings. However, Odysseus did not listen,
he wanted to see what else the cyclops had to offer, so he risked the lives of his men for his personal
needs. Time and time again Odysseus, the "epic hero" and "brilliant leader," risked his men's lives
for little or no reward. This is shown again later in story, as where his impulsiveness, arrogance, and
greed lead to another reason why he is not suited with the description of an epic hero. In the
Odyssey, Homer wrote Odysseus' words, "Cyclops if ever a mortal man inquire how you were put to
shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye; Laertes' son, whose home is
Ithaca!" This quote shows Odysseus' arrogance after he blinded the cyclops. Believing he had
defeated the cyclops Odysseus decided to stroke his ego and reveal his name and put his men at risk.
With this not well thought out idea, it caused the rest of Odysseus' journey to be cursed by Poseidon.
Without his men's best thoughts in mind, Odysseus decided getting recognition was better than
safety. Not to mention, after these events, Odysseus was shown as a more of an unlike leader and

Amphinomus is clearly depicted as an antagonist in The Odyssey. He is one of the dozens of suitors
who plague Odysseus' home, eat all his livestock, drink all his wine, and vie for his wife's hand in
marriage. Perhaps worst of all, Amphinomus is part of the conspiracy to kill Telemachus. However,
