Using a proprietary formula, it recognizes top advisors, including the top women, independent, and institutional financial advisors. In addition to accounting for each advisor’s managed assets, revenue produced, and practice quality, Barron’s verifies all information through regulatory databases, securities firms, and conversations advisors.

Previously, institutional advisors were not ranked separately because advisors were able to work with institutions part- time. However, increasing regulations and the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 have meant that the position requires full- time attention, and the number of dedicated institutional advisors has risen accordingly.
