Bauhaus: Introduction
• The Bauhaus was founded in 1919 in the city of Weimar
by German architect Walter Gropius (1883–1969).
• The Bauhaus saw the rapid increase in technological
development as removing the soul from manufacturing
and reducing art’s purpose in society.
• Its aim had been to bring artists and craftspeople together
to ensure the survival of beautiful craftsmanship in the
face of mechanized labour and mass production.

Bauhaus: Historical Context
• Prior to the 20th century most things (like furniture and
other everyday items) were still made by hand and by
craftspeople
• With the Industrial revolution and the spread of factories
across Europe the way things were made changed
radically
• Production lines and mass production became
increasingly common and the idea of craftspersonship
was at risk of decline.

Bauhaus: history
• The Architect Walter Gropius was worried about the
decline of craftspersonship in the face of industrialised
production of everyday things
• Gropius believed that creativity and manufacturing were
drifting apart, he founded the Bauhaus with the aim to
unite them once again, rejuvenating design for everyday
life.
• The Bauhaus was a design school where students were
taught to create objects/design/buildings in a way met the
practical necessity of the modern world but used craft and
works personship that had been lost in the rise of
technological manufacturing.
