Computers need backing storage outside the CPU to
store data and programs not currently in use.
There are three main types of storage device:
Those that store data by magnetizing a
special material that coats the surface of a disk.
Those that store data using optical
technology to etch the data onto a plastic-
coated metal disk. Laser beams are then
passed over the surface to read the data.
Flash drives use solid state technology
and store data in a similar way to the BIOS
chip.

The hard disk of the computer stores
the system information, programs and
data that the computer uses every day.
Computer servers will use RAID systems

capacity and safer storage. The drives
can be mirrored so that data written to
one of them is also written to others, so if
one drive fails, the others just take over.
Removable hard drives plug into the
USB port and can be used for backup or
transfer of data to another computer.
BACKING STORAGE – HARD DRIVES

There are two main types of optical storage: CD and DVD. They
look exactly the same, but DVDs hold much more data than CDs and
need different drives to read them.
CD-ROMs are read only – you can read data from
them but can’t write more data to them.
CD-Rs allow you to write data once, but you can’t
write over it.
CD-RWs allow you to write data and then record
new data over it.
DVD-Rs and RWs follow the same pattern.
You need special software to write to CDs and DVDs
– you cannot simply copy files to them.

more popular.
It holds a lot of data in a very small space.

servers.
When you access a webpage, your

Every JAMB candidate will sit for
Computer Based Test popularly known
as CBT exam. Although this might not
be new to some people but there are
many applicants who will struggle or
even fail because of their limited
knowledge of computer.

TEACH THEM BASICS OF COMPUTING
(COMPUTER APPRECIATION)
Knowing how computer
set works and being
computer literate will
afford you some extra time
during JAMB exam
because you will not have
to need to ask your exam
invigilator questions about
how to do something in
your computer.

Provide CBT software for
Practice CBT Exam
This software is a simulation of what the CBT examination looks like. It
has a timing and a pool of questions for a set of combinations. The time
starts reading backwards from the time allowed to zero when the test
closes up
Do not wait until the last day before you start practicing allowing your
students practice on CBT software.

Time Management
In CBT exams, one thing
every candidate should be
conscious of is time. Time
management can make or
break your success.
Do not focus more or spend
more time on questions that
you do know off head. You
can jump them and come back
to them when you must have
been done with all the
questions you know.

Pay attention to instruction
This is not peculiar to JAMB
CBT exam. It is a very
important habit you must
cultivate.
Don’t make the mistake of
trying to cheat time and you
forego the examination
instructions

Make sure you mark your
answer
When you are inside an exam
hall, the atmosphere is quite
different. There is element of
pressure and anxiety.
Try to be as focus as you can
and make sure you answered
any question you know by
ticking or selecting it before
moving to the next question.
