“The statistical analysis of bibliographic data mainly in the
scientific and technical literatures. It measures the amount of scientific
activity in a subject category, journal, country or other area of interest.“

External stakeholders
➢Demonstrate the impact of your own
research or that of your research
group
➢Identify areas of research strength
and weakness to inform future
research priorities for an institution
➢Identify top performing journals /
researchers in a subject area

Bibliometrics
Methodology: Publication counts
The number of publications produced by an individual, unit or
institution is the most basic metric used to measure productivity.
Take into account:
- Number of researches in
each of the institutions
- the disciplines covered
- the actual publications
covered in SCOPUS and
the depth of coverage
Count of papers produced by 4 institutions
retrieved using the SCOPUS database

Bibliometrics
Methodology: Citation counts
Citations are used to
measure the impact or
influence of a paper
or group of papers. It is
important to note that
the count will vary
depending on the tool
used.
Schools publications in Web of Science (WOS)
(Total of 256 papers were found. The papers were cited 6113
times by publications indexed in the WOS and for the time period
covered.
Also view:
- Average citations per paper
- Average citations per institution
Consider:
- The number of researchers in
each institution (when comparing
institutions)

Bibliometrics
Methodology: H-index
The h index (a single number) takes into account productivity (paper
counts) AND impact (citation). If an individual has a h-index of 7, this
means 7 of their papers have been cited at least 7 times each.
Caution!:
Can only be used effectively by
comparing like with like: for
example: similar institutions.

career

Bibliometrics
Methodology: Journal Impact Factor
The JIF is a metric applied to individual journals. JIF represents the
average citation counts of papers published in a journal over a
two year period. JIF is produced using data from the Web of
Science. The JIF is updated every year and published in the Journal
Citation Reports (JCR).
Caution!:
You must always compare like with like and understand the context of the title's
JIF data.
Different journals can have the highest impact in their particular category, even
though one of them can have much smaller JIF than the other.

Bibliometrics
Analysis
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
▪ Quantitative way of measuring impact of
the research
▪ Metrics vary between cited and not-cited
and do not necessarily guarantee the
quality
i.e its possible for articles to be cited but for
negative reasons
▪ Transparency of the procedure and
reproducibility of the same method
▪ Deceived information
i..e exploitability by researchers and journals
to falsely boost bibliometric score
▪ Inexpensive to implement and use ▪ May drive researchers to encourage
researching based on their popularity,
not the value of the research itself
▪ Time-friendly ▪ Variation between areas of study need to
take into account that publication
frequency and citation cultures differ
i.e. cannot compare two industries
▪ Scalability: Can be observed on
individual, national, institutional or
international levels
