CONTENTS
Bioaccumulation
• Bioaccumulation is the build
up of chemicals in the first
organism in a food chain. The
chemical build up could be
from food intake, respiration,
physical contact, etc. This
results in the organism having
a higher concentration of this
chemical than its surrounding
environment. An example of
bioaccumulation is the build
up of mercury in fish. Fish are
the first organism to intake the
mercury which is
bioaccumulation. As the fish
are eaten by organisms in
higher atrophic levels, this is
biomagnification.
Biomagnification is
the process where
chemicals accumulate
AND become more
concentrated at each
trophic level of the
food chain.
