Vaccine Safety: āŗFor vaccine safety vaccines are first tested on transgenic mice, developed for use in testing before they are used on humans. āŗ Transgenic mice are being used to test the safety of the polio vaccine. āŗ If successful and found to be reliable, they could replace the use of monkeys to test the safety of batches of the vaccine. 5. Chemical safety testing āŗ Transgenic animals- introduced with genes which make them more sensitive than non- transgenic āŗ They are then exposed to toxic substances- effect studied āŗ Toxicity testing in such animals will allow us to obtain results in less time.

In contrast the developing & underdeveloped world is rich in biodiversity and traditional knowledge related to bio- resources. āŗ Traditional knowledge related to bio-resources can be exploited to develop modern applications and can also be used to save time, effort and expenditure during their commercialization. - 39. āŗ Realization ofthe injustice, inadequate compensation and benefit sharing between developed and developing countries led some nations to develop laws to prevent such unauthorized exploitation of bio-resources and traditional knowledge. āŗ The Indian Parliament has cleared the second amendment of the Indian Patents Bill, that takes such issues into consideration, including patent terms emergency provisions and research and development initiative.
