Sickle cell disease results from a genetic mutation causing abnormal hemoglobin, leading to sickle-shaped red blood cells that impair blood flow. Blood transfusions provide normal red blood cells, alleviating anemia and reducing blood viscosity, thus helping to manage disease symptoms and prevent complications such as stroke. This treatment is especially beneficial for children with sickle cell disease, although some may still experience recurrent strokes despite repeated transfusions.
