Chapter 21 describes the growing influence of the white man and Christians in Umuofia. Mr. Brown, a white missionary, leads the Christians and establishes a school which proves successful. This causes conflicts as Okonkwo strongly opposes the white people and fears the clan is changing. Nwoye is sent to Mr. Brown's teacher training college, further angering Okonkwo. Akunna and Mr. Brown have long discussions about religion but neither succeeds in converting the other.
