This document summarizes guidelines for diagnosing and treating ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury in veterinary patients. IR injury occurs when blood flow is restored to tissues after a period of ischemia, paradoxically causing more cell damage. The diagnosis is based on clinical signs associated with the underlying ischemic event and supportive lab abnormalities. Treatment focuses on restoring perfusion through fluid therapy, vasopressors or inotropes if needed, blood products, and antioxidants to reduce oxidative damage from IR. Prognosis depends on the severity and duration of ischemia as well as the extent of organ injury caused by reperfusion.
