#Freethetextbook
Free the Textbook is a
nationwide initiative that calls on
college and university leaders,
educators and students to
closely examine the fine print of
their automatic billing programs
(AKA “Inclusive Access” or “Day
One Access”) and make sure
they are inclusive of ALL
students.

Today’s Discussion Topics
• Teaching Practices
• Institutional Pressures
• Automatic Billing / “Inclusive Access”
Teaching Practices
● How does OER impact faculty freedom to engage with
students? What/who does it empower? How is it
limiting?
● How does this shift in teaching practices prompted by
open education impact educators who are comfortable
(and arguably effective) with their use of publisher
materials?
Institutional Pressures
● Traditionally, costly publisher textbooks have been the
default. Why not make OER the default? What would be
the implications for this at the department/division level?
● What should institutional OER initiatives do to avoid the
perception that they are infringing on faculty freedom?
Automatic Billing / “Inclusive Access”
● How can we see Automatic Billing / Inclusive Access as
a symptom of a larger institutional issue?
● What are the long-term implications of the adoption of
AB/IA to solve short-term problems?
● How do AB/IA publisher offerings impact academic
freedom?
