MH ACROSS CULTURES
Across different cultures and languages, people talk
about and explore mental health in multiple ways.
In just a few words, please share:
How have you experienced the concept of "mental
health" within your own cultural communities?
In asian culture, some think depression is not real. That its just people being "dramatic"
it is a curse
really is something that we don't talk about much in the community i grew up in, mental
health is a sign of weakness
Where I grew up I knew some people who didn't believe in mental illness
Stigma and you should just pray more
was raised in fundamentalist christianity. mental illness was a sign of sin or lack of faith
That it is an excuse for poor behavior
many people stay at home as they are because of stigma
#Poetry4MentalHealth
#Movies4MentalHealth
WHAT IS STIGMA?
A judgment or stereotype that is:
○ Always negative
○ Always untrue
○ Can be internalized

im proud of him
I felt hopeful
very open and I felt this was very brave of him to share something so personal.
Too many people go untreated; they hide
It made me feel sad he went through that
I love the change through the artwork.
I am happy that he is doing much better.
One of my daughter's closest cousins committed suicide. He was 22yrs. old and a
transgender man. This was a very difficult time in her life.
it was a message of hope, light at the end of the tunnel. I once caught my brother cutting
himself, so it hit home a bit
a courageous man
I am glad this is being discussed. I have a family member who experienced this. Super
difficult
So sad, he was living a nightmare and released it with art.
This video opened up perspectives for me
He showed so much strength and courage

#Poetry4MentalHealth
How can we support ourselves and
others?
#Movies4MentalHealth
Inspiring that somebody can help people with mental illness
accepting and help others who are dealing with mental illness
i think best way is through listening truly listen
being there to listen and not judge
open up when we need to and listen when others need to speak
How we can support ourselves and others is being there for that person or yourself,
and that it's ok to get help if needed. Talk more about Mental health and just being a
team and coming together.
By taking care of yourself before you take care of others
validating everyone's feelings
Check in with one another especially if we know they are struggling
[21:00] Norma : I think by practicing to be our best selves. And putting positive energy
out to the world is a good way of helping
Don't ignore
asking them if they'd like me to listen or give advice.
Be aware of the signs, & available if someone needed to talk .
