PLACE VALUE AND FACE VALUE
The place value of a digit depends on the position of the digit in the place value chart ,where as
the face value of a digit is the value of the digit itself
 Find the place value and face value of the underlined digits
Number Place Value Face value
51,23,489 3000 3
58,79,066 800000 8
8,51,43,601 600 6
8,34,09,117 9000 9
EXPANDED FORM AND STANDARD FORM
The expanded form is a way of expressing a number as the sum of the place value of
all the digits.
Eg: 5,45,567 = 500000 + 40000 + 5000 + 500 + 60 + 7
And when we write any number in figures, it is known as standard form
Eg. 60000 +2000 +400 + 30 +2 = 62,432
Write in expanded form
a. 3,78,41,629
3,00,00,000 + 70,00,000 + 8,00,000 + 40,000 + 1,000 + 600 + 20 + 9
b. 7,59,83,428
7,00,00,000 + 50,00,000 + 9,00,000 + 80,000 + 3,000 + 400 + 20 + 8
Write in standard form
a. 2,00,00,000 + 80,00,000 + 3,00,000 +10,000 + 8,000 + 700 + 60
= 2,83,18,760
b. 4 x 1,00,00,000 + 3 x10,00,000 + 1 x 10
= 4, 00,00,000 + 30,00,000 + 10
= 4,30,00,010
c. 60,00,000 + 5,00,000 + 3,000 + 800 +10
= 65,03,810
COMPARISON OF NUMBERS
RULE 1 : When comparing two numbers , first look for the number of digits in both.
The number having more number of digits is larger.
eg. 5,43,17,589 and 89,74,567
5,43,17,589 > 89,74,567
RULE 2 : When the number of digits are the same ,then we start comparing the digits
starting from the left to the right.
eg. 4,97,68,458 and 4,98,63,279
4,97,68,458 < 4,98,63,279
Same rules to be followed for arranging the number in Ascending and Descending order
Write the following numbers in ascending order.
a. 3,49,86,241 ; 35,79,840 ; 4,16,890 ; 4 ,16 ,84, 312
4,16,890 < 35,79,840 < 3,49,86,241 < 4,16,84,312
b. 8,46,89,415 ; 84,00,160 ; 94 ,18,762 ; 1,65,42,000
79,74,231< 5,97,00,024 < 8,46,89,415 < 8,64,11,027
Write the following numbers in descending order.
c. 4,95,86,312 ; 9,87,21,684 ; 5,19,48,316 ; 9,84,16,822
9,87,21,684 > 9,84,16,822 > 5,19,48,316 > 4,95,86,312
b. 20,14,832 ; 8,65,17,890 ; 66,41,748 ; 9,64,87,196
9,64,87,196 > 8,65,17,890 > 66,41,748 > 20,14,832
Forming Numbers
In order to form the largest number from the given digits, we arrange them in the descending
order. If the smallest number is required to be formed, then we arrange the given digits in
ascending order
Digit Largest Smallest
1,8,9,7,3,0,4 98,74,310 10,34,789
9,1,0,4,6,3,5,2 9,65,43,210 1,02,34,569
2,1,7,9,0,3,6,4 9,76,43,210, 1,02,34,679
• Form the number by repeating the given digits
a. Smallest 7 digit number
i. 4,6,0,3,2
= 20,00,346
ii. 1,2,5,9,7 = 11,12,579
b. Largest 8 digit number
i. 2,1,0,5,7
= 7,77,75,210
ii. 9,6,5,1,2
= 9,99,96,521
SUCCESSOR AND PREDECESSOR
The number that comes just after the given number is called the successor of that number
Or
successor = number + 1
The number that comes just before the given number is called the predecessor of that number
Or
Predecessor = number - 1
Numbers Successor Predecessor

ROUNDING OFF NUMBERS
let me tell the rules to you.

Round that number up the line.
For the digits four and less,
Round that number down, oh yes!
Round up! Five through nine!
Round down! Four and less!
Round up! Five through nine!

ROMAN NUMERALS
Rules for writing numbers in Roman numerals are as follows:
 If a symbol is repeated, its value is added as many times as it occurs.
eg. II = 2 and XXX = 30
 If a smaller numeral follows a larger numeral, the numbers are added.
eg. VI = 5 + 1 = 6 , XI = 10 + 1 = 11
 If a smaller numeral precedes a larger numeral, the numbers are subtracted.
eg. IV = 5-1 = 4 , IX = 10 -1 = 9
 A symbol is not repeated more than three times.
1 5 10 50 100 500 1000
I V X L C D M
7 basic symbols for writing numerals
 V , L and D are never repeated or subtracted.
 When a smaller numeral is written in between two large numeral , it is always
subtracted from the larger numeral just after it.
eg. XIX = 10 +(10- 1) = 19
IMPORTANT
I can be subtracted from V and X only
X can be subtracted from L and c only.
C can be subtracted from D and M only
 Write the Roman numeral for the following
a. 94 = 90 + 4
= XCIV
b. 134 = 100 + 30 + 4
= CXXXIV
c. 171 = 100 + 70 + 1
= CLXXI
d.2012 = 2000 + 10 + 2
= MMXII
e. 3521 = 3000 + 500 + 20 + 1
=MMMDXXI
 Write the Hindu Arabic numeral for the following.
a. XLIX
= (50 –10) + 9 = 49
b.MDCLI
= 1000 + 500 + 100 + 50 + 1 = 1651
c.DCCCLIII
= 500 + 100 + 100 + 100 + 50 + 3
= 853
d.MDLXII
= 1000 + 500 + 50 + 10 + 2 = 1562
Solve the following
a. CDIII + CMXXIX
=403 + 929
= 1332
= MCCCXXXII
b. LXIX – XVII
= 69 − 17
= 52
= LII
