Challenges at University of
Sunderland libraries - library space
as learning styles and access to
resources evolve
Rachel Dolan – Campus Library Manager
Murray Library
• 2007 – Phase 1 (social learning space,
refurbishment of the library lecture theatre,
launch of the library café)
• 2010 - Phase 2 (creation of flexible learning
spaces on Level 1)
• 2011 – Phase 3 (remodelling of Level 3,
immersive technology zones, multipurpose
flexible spaces, a silent reading room, bookable
study areas)
Before….
After…
2017 challenges
• 2007 – attitudinal and behavioural research
informed refurbishment but in 10 years…
• Changes to technology and patterns of
technology use
• Teaching and high use resources relocated
• Wifi in student halls improved
• Other Uni spaces and areas refurbished
• Staff change management – the transition from
managing stock to supporting learning.
• UK-HE environment
Challenging areas
Library as unique space?

2007 Feedback…
2017 feedback attitudinal plus
behavioural research…still collating
Observed student behaviour…
…then created 30 new spaces
to improve learning spaces
during exams
Hummm…
• Acoustics vs open plan –
students building nooks?
• Learning space use
patterns change
throughout the year
• But…lots of people like to
sit in the same places
• Conflict between
‘furniture moving groups’
in the building
• Co-horts vary
• No individual bookable
silent study demand
increasing?
• UX – producing lots of
data so far, challenging to
take further in between
refurbs but opportunity to
take your time tracking
student behaviour within
the library and beyond in
other spaces.
Research ongoing…
• Behavioural methods alongside attitudinal - observation;
behavioural mapping, shadowing …
• In between refurbs...lots of time to build research…
• Study behavioural use of university learning spaces as a
whole – (mico ux within library - macro ux across campus)
• Want students and academics to use and engage in library
spaces in innovative and creative ways which make use of
our collections – game jams, collaborative events, coding
and hacks, arranging academic staff development within
library spaces, some academic staff experimenting with
building ‘connection times’ for students within the library
into modules…
