Chapter 3- Learning How You Learn

1.) Why explore who you are as a learner?
          - Building metacognition {which refers to thinking about thinking} and self-knowledge
will help become a better student and decision maker because the more you know
about yourself, the more effectively you can analyze courses, study environments.
-Self-knowledge also help you come up with ideas as well as practical choices about
what, how and where to study.
-You can also learn to understand how other people learn differently than you and
          improve teamwork.
-Become aware of how to cope and grow in college and in the work field.
-Develop into a successful lifelong learner.

2.) What tools will help you assess how you learn and interact with others?

-Multiple Pathways to Learning is learning preferences assessment focusing on eight
areas of potential, based on Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences {MI} theory.
-Gardner develop the belief that the traditional view of intelligence is based on
mathematical, logical, and verbal measurements comprising an intelligence quotient
           {IQ}
           -Based on the 8 intelligences; Bodily-Kinesthetic, Verbal-Linguistic, Visual-Spatial,
Logical-Mathematical, Musical, Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, and Naturalistic
-Personality assessments help you understand how you respond to the world around
you, including people, work, and school.
-Also helps guides you as you explore majors and careers.
-The concept of dividing human beings into 4 basic personality types, in the
Personality Spectrum, goes as far back as Aristole and Hippocrates.
-The personality Spectrum “helps you identify the kind of interactions that are most
           and least comfortable to you”
-Dimensions can change over time in reaction to new experiences, effort and practice.
-The 4 dimensions are Thinker, Organizer, Giver and Adventurer

3.) How can you use your self-knowledge?

           - In the classroom you can recognize matches and mismatches between yourself and
           the instructors
           -Appreciate matches/mismatches among classmates
-Overcome mismatches by asking for additional help from the instructor, finding a
tutor, or joining a study group
-Choose technology that is appropriate for your style
-Select a major and a career plan that make the most of your strengths
-Draw on your insights to be an effective employee and team player

4.) How can you identify and manage learning disabilities?
           - Learning disabilities are neurological disorders that interfere with one’s ability to
           store, process, and produce information.
-A disability must be diagnosed by a licensed professional to receive publically-funded
           aid
-You can manage your learning disabilities by:
-Contact the designated advisor on your campus
           -Accommodations may include:
           -Extended test time
           -Note taking assistance
           -Modified assignments
           -Assistive technology
           -Stay informed about your disability.
-Be a responsible student and take charge of your learning
