Acts 1:2-3 until the day in which He was taken up . . .
ἀναλαμβάνω (analambanō) = lifted up and carry
Acts 1:11 “Men of Galilee,
why do you stand gazing up
into heaven? This same
Jesus, who was taken up
from you into heaven. . .”
Acts 1:22 that day when He
was taken up from us, one of
these must become a witness
with us of His resurrection.”
Luke 24:45-49 And He opened their understanding,
that they might comprehend the Scriptures. 46 Then
He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was
necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from
the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and
remission of sins should be preached in His name to
all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And you are
witnesses of these things. 49 “Behold, I send the
Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city
of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from
on high.”

Luke 24:50 And He led them out as far as Bethany,
and He lifted up His hands and blessed them.
5
6
Luke 24:51–53 51 Now it came to pass, while He
blessed them, that He was parted from them and
carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped Him,
and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and
were continually in the temple praising and blessing
God. Amen.
7
“parted from” – διΐσταμαι (diistamai) = depart from,
separate
“carried up” – ἀναφέρω (anapherō) = carry up, be
borne upward
9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they
watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him
out of their sight.
Acts 1:4–5 And being assembled together with
them, He commanded them not to depart from
Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the
Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from
Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you
shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many
days from now.”
9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they
watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him
out of their sight.
Acts 1:6–8 Therefore, when they had come
together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You
at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 And
He said to them, “It is not for you to know times
or seasons which the Father has put in His own
authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the
Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be
witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea
and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Psalm 110:1 The LORD ( ‫י‬‫ה‬‫ו‬‫ה‬ ) said to my Lord ( ‫א‬ָ‫ד‬‫וֹ‬‫ן‬
ʾā·ḏôn), “Sit at My right hand, till I make Your
enemies Your footstool.” (Acts 2:34; Heb. 1:13; Cf.
also Psa. 2, 18, 20, 21, 45, 61, 72, 89, 110, 132).
John 6:62 What then if you should see the Son
of Man ascend where He was before?
Matthew 26:64 Jesus said to him (Caiaphas), “It
is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you,
hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at
the right hand of the Power, and coming on the
clouds of heaven.”
John 20:17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to
Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father;
but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am
ascending to My Father and your Father, and to
My God and your God.’ ”
1. The Christ:
9 Now when He had spoken these things, while

1. The Christ:
9 Now when He had spoken these things, while
they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud
received Him out of their sight.
“received” = aorist, active
2. The Apostles:
9 Now when He had spoken these things, while
they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud
received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they
looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up,
“they watched” – βλέπω (blepō) = physical & mental
perception (present participle)
“they looked steadfastly” – εἰμί (eimi) = to be (aorist
participle)
3. The Two Men:
10 And while they looked steadfastly toward
heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by
them in white apparel,
• Moses & Elijah
• Angels
4. The Question:
11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you
stand gazing up into heaven?
“gazing” – ἐµβλέπω (emblepō) = look closely, earnestly
fix one’s gaze, stare intently
5. The Promise:
11 who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you
stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus,
who was taken up from you into heaven, will so
come in like manner as you saw Him go into
heaven.”
“in like manner” – τρόπος (tropos) = in the same way
John 17:4 I have glorified You on the earth. I have
finished the work which You have given Me to do.
1. It signified the end & success of His
earthly ministry.
2. It signaled the coming of the Holy Spirit.
John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to
your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go
away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I
depart, I will send Him to you.
3. It marked the return of His heavenly glory.
John 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify Me together
with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You
before the world was. (cp. Transfiguration Mt. 17:1-9)
Philippians 2:5–9 Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the
form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal
with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation,
taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the
likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as
a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient
to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9
Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and
given Him the name which is above every name,
4. It symbolized His exaltation by the Father.
5. It allowed Him to prepare a place for us.
John 14:2 In My Father’s house are many mansions;
if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to
prepare a place for you.
Hebrews 4:14–16 Seeing then that we have a
great High Priest who has passed through the
heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our
confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest
who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but
was in all points tempted as we are, yet without
sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne
of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace
to help in time of need.
6. It indicated the beginning of His new work
as High Priest.
6. It indicated the beginning of His new work
as High Priest.
Hebrews 9:14–15 how much more shall the blood
of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered
Himself without spot to God, cleanse your
conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new
covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of
the transgressions under the first covenant, that
those who are called may receive the promise of the
eternal inheritance.
7. It set the pattern for His return.
Acts 1:11 This same Jesus, who was taken up from
you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you
saw Him go into heaven.”
Matthew 24:30 Then the sign of the Son of Man
will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the
earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man
coming on the clouds of heaven with power and
great glory.
7. It set the pattern for His return.
Daniel 7:13–14 “I was watching in the night visions,
and behold, One like the Son of Man, coming with
the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of
Days, and they brought Him near before Him. 14 Then
to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom,
that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve
Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which
shall not pass away, and His kingdom the one which
shall not be destroyed.
