Constitutional Law of India - 1
General Instructions
Gagan K
Which book to refer
• Mainly three books can be referred:
– 1. JN Pandey
– 2. VN Shukla
– 3. MP Jain
JN Pandey
• Said to be in simple language
• Famous in the Hindi belt / north India
• I feel the book is decent one, but at times
disorganised and doesn’t give the final
position of law
• Handy when in a hurry
VN Shukla
• A very good book
• Very well organised as per the Articles
and topics and sub topics are systematic
and not confusing
• No need of keeping a bare Act since the
book itself contains the Constitutional text.
• Not too detail, but lays down the law to the
right point
• Highly reliable
MP Jain
• Elaborate
• Doesn’t go as per the Articles
• Goes as per the topics that fall under
various Articles
• Elaborate and well discussed topics
• At times difficult to find out the exact point
we are looking for.
Which one to refer?
• JN Pandey is not recommended.
• One can read from MP Jain and VN Shukla.
• For emergency situations, VN Shukla is best.
• What about Dukkis / Kunjis? They may be good
sometimes. But be careful
• Need AIR and Seervai? Not necessary unless
you want to go in dept.
• Bare Act is not needed if you are having VN
Shukla
I referred
• I have prepared these slides using both
MP Jain and VN Shukla books. I have also
referred additional sources here and there.
• For Module 1, I have referred MP Jain fully
• For Module 2, I have referred VN Shukla
Tips
• There are very limited Articles and it is advantageous if
you can remember every Article number.
• Case laws are highly important (especially for Module-2).
Though you may never be able to remember each and
every case, at least remember at least 1 major case in
each topic.
• Facts of the case are not important, the “principles”
arising out of the cases are important.
• No need to remember the case citations.
• At times, even writing the alternative or short name of
the cases can save you. For example: RC Cooper case
can also be named as “Banks Nationalisation case”
