When is the Cloud right for you? Let’s start by defining what the Cloud is!
The Cloud
The Cloud Defined Is a service delivery model for application deployment over the internet Electricity Analogy – Think of our existing power grid. Very few of us really understands how it works but we all know how to flip a light switch The underlying concept of cloud computing dates back to the 1960s, when John McCarthy thought that "computation may someday be organized as a public utility." Almost all the modern-day characteristics of cloud computing (elastic provision, provided as a utility, online, illusion of infinite supply), the comparison to the electricity industry and the use of public, private, government and community forms was thoroughly explored in Douglas Parkhill's 1966 book, The Challenge of the Computer Utility .
Common uses of Cloud computing today Small Businesses that want to take advantage of Enterprise level applications for a small monthly fee using S.a.a.S (Software as a Service) Medium sized businesses that have an on-premise infrastructure that replicates to the Cloud Medium and Large businesses that want to move specific web based applications to the Cloud Clients that want to completely Virtualize their infrastructure in the Cloud
Cloud services checklist Security risks Is my data secure? Am I accessing my data in a secure way? Importance of encryption when working in the Cloud Regulatory compliance Disaster recovery No end user responsibility Less cost to backup Dependent upon disaster recovery procedures by vendor Have to worry about vendor compliancy issues specific to your industry
Cloud services checklist… continued How long has the company been in business? Relatively new concept so look for companies that have native experience and have not just purchased other companies that did Cloud computing Talk to your IT consultant Not all applications will run well in the Cloud so it is important to understand when you should use the Cloud and what types of Cloud services run your applications the best
Types of Cloud services Virtualization VM Ware, Hyper V and Zen Server (Application Server enhanced VM for Citrix) S.a.a.S Salesforce.com, Google Apps, Quickbooks Online, etc. Remote access Terminal Services, Citrix, Logmein, Gotomypc etc. Virtual Storage Box.net Dropbox.com Hosted Exchange Email 1and1.com Intermedia.com Hosted Servers, hosted Virtual Servers and Colocation Ubistor.com Rackspace.com
Closing The media is trying to introduce this technology as a commodity to enable consumer confidence. The Cloud means nothing if your business is not efficient or if your data is insecure so knowing each type of cloud services pros and cons are critical Consult your IT Consultant before you make any decisions you might regret. Because of the popularity of Microsoft’s “To the Cloud” marketing campaign it may instill over confidence and make you rush to a decision that a particular Cloud offering is right for you but bandwidth, database platform, application development and infrastructure all need to be aligned for the Cloud to work as it was designed If you don’t have a resource for discussing a Cloud strategy, please consider Technologyville a valuable resource for implementing any sized Cloud infrastructure
Technologyville Service Offerings Virtualization Cloud Services Managed Services Server Migrations and upgrades PC and Mac upgrades and installs Firewall, Router, Wireless & Switch installation and configuration VPN client, Point-to-Point VPN and Security Appliance Configuration Hosted and on Premise Exchange Email Messaging Disaster Recovery and Online Backup
