Desired Outcome You leave with a framework for thought and action (on collaboration) You know what Web 2.0 can do and can’t do You know what Foldera is about
Collaboration … Framework for Thinking and Action 1 2 3
Business is crazy, Information workers are overwhelmed Business is Crazy China as emerging global powerhouse Work life balance Travel and transportation Consumers have global publication power Globalization of markets Cross-border merger and acquisition activity
Business is crazy, Information workers are overwhelmed Information workers are overwhelmed Enable productivity … remove distractions Be productive and build productive capacity Information tsunami
Email sucks for collaboration, Something more is needed Conversation confusion Document version chaos Sharing limited to sending Inability to segregate into activities
co-labouring collaboration together aligned in sync doing work contributing following passion
7 essential capabilities of a Collaboration Environment Shared Access to Team Data Location Independent Access Auto- Discovery Enterprise Action Mgmt Social Engagement Tools Team-aware Calendaring Shared Real-Time Viewing

Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0 (a. The Story) 1 2 3
Web 2.0 “It’s a philosophy / theory” “It’s a set of products” Wikis Blogs Social bookmarking “It’s a marketing term”
Big Ideas of Web 2.0 Web delivered services User-generated content Social connections between people Pretty and fast UI Aggregate the voice of many
Web 2.0 in the Enterprise Adaptation or mere appropriation of Web 2.0 technology for enterprise usage Project teams via wiki or blog Social bookmarking behind the firewall
Nice wiki story Last week, a prospect asked me for a comparison between Forums and Wikis for creating a community. "Good question," I thought, "do we have any collateral on that?" A quick search of our corporate wiki didn't show anything promising. So I posted a wiki page called "Forums vs Wikis" with a few starting comments and the purpose of the page, knowing that our team of 30 constantly watches the "What's New" section of our wiki. Within four hours, five team members, including engineers, had contributed to the wiki page with numerous revisions. I had basically a final version that I simply exported as a Word doc, tweaked with final formatting, and emailed to the customer.
Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0 (b. Evaluation) 1 2 3
The ideas are not new “ Whatever language we use to describe it, the beating heart of the Internet has always been its ability to leverage our social connections … Social-networking sites like MySpace, Facebook and Friendster struck a powerful social chord at the right time with the right technology, but the actions they enable are nothing new.” Pew Internet Project, October 2006
Notes 1999 = Web 2.0 2006
Wikis and Blogs aren’t enough Wiki: 1, 2~ Is just a Notes database where everyone is an “Editor” Blog: 1~, 2~, 5~, 7~ … they can play a role, but they aren’t enough
The tools lack necessary elements iScrybe (sync-to-paper??) Wiki access when provider offline? Exit strategy My stuff Vendor viability Application data continuity
Unimaginative applications Applications: Managing meetings Brainstorming and publishing Collaborative creation of compelling presentations Benefits: Less email traffic Faster turnaround Reduces reliance on people as combiners
Enterprise Social Bookmarking 1 2 7
Enterprise Social Bookmarking Digg Registered Users Contributed 100% Contributed 55% Contributed 10% 445,000 2,287 (0.51%) 100 (0.02%) 10 (0.002%) … it’s hard to build a case for collaborative bookmarking with 0.26 people to do the work … the long tail is irrelevant if the body is drawn and quartered! SMB 50 50 0.26 0.01 0.001 SMB 500 500 2.6 0.1 0.01
Major concerns in Enterprise use Put burden of integration on the end user Easy justification and implementation for the first 20% Low applicability due to smaller numbers … perhaps Web 2.0 merely brings enterprise-y capabilities to consumers
Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0 (c. A Theory) 1 2 3
A bit of IS theory … human action structures technology technology structures human action
What’s different? Technology (minor) Opportunity for social appropriation Key question: Are the people at your organisation more / same / less likely to embrace W2.0/E2.0 rather than previous stuff?
IT Department IT BP vs.
The Triangle: From Innovation to Use zone of frothiness zone of weeding out zone of use
Think more about the work processes that need to improve … Intentional action … TIME TO THINK Give yourself permission to do so Make it a priority Reflect on … What works? What could be better? What isn’t working? What do you need to better inform (or enable) your action?
Final Words on Enterprise 2.0 Green Fields Examine fit, Test vendor stability, Explore adoptability Slush n Slop What’s the problem that’s holding up adoption? Concrete Pad What’s the incremental benefit, and who cares? … if all you’re using is email and attachments, you’ll get a big improvement by embracing Enterprise 2.0
All about Foldera (in 3 phrases) 1 2 3
Collections of Activity-Related Artifacts activity email task calendar document people instant message
Shared Artifacts or Collections Today … Send to share Creates duplicate copies Foldera … Live artifact sharing Invite colleagues Contextual feedback
Unification AND Contextualisation Unification: All emails, tasks, calendars, documents Contextualisation: Only emails, tasks, calendars, documents related to a project
