The Comenius programme was established by the EU in 1995 to support teacher training, establish school partnerships across Europe, and fund multilateral education projects related to language learning, intercultural education, environmental and science education. It became a major part of the Lifelong Learning Programme launched in 2007, along with other programmes for higher education, adult education, and vocational education. Comenius seeks to help students and teachers in schools develop a sense of belonging to a broader European community characterized by diversity but rooted in a shared history.
