Given the quadratic equation f(x)= 1-8x+2x^2, the completing the square method was used to rewrite it in the form of (x-h)^2 + k, where h and k are constants. The steps were to make sure the equation began with x^2 only, then complete the square of the term with x, and finally rewrite the equation ignoring the linear term as (x-2)^2 - 7.
